If you want to mod F4, go back to the pre-update state (via mods, for example :) ) and go from there. I myself run F4 with about 200 mods and it works. The game has been out for years, many modders are highly professional, their mods work and many of these mods are fantastic. If you want to be on the safe side (like I) make a backup copy of your whole Fallout 4 game including mods once in a while and store it in a safe place, so you have something to come back to in case something strange happens (like an update breaking things). Apart from that, use a mod organizer, be aware of what mods might lead to conflicts and don't install ones that have 100 reported bugs. If you do that, a modded F4 can be anything for you, from an extended vanilla game to a complete overhaul. :)
