Unarmed worth it?
the fist weapons cant be equipped in power armor making the damage of punches in power armor underwhelming, is being unarmed even worth it? Maybe later with some power armor modifications? The show makes the power armor punches looks so powerful...

Unarmed is broken in every Bethesda game. Its OPAF. Want to explode a deathclaw without explosives? Unarmed.

Is it tho? I am still in the early game and the punches doesnt feel powerful compared to melee or guns, is that with or without power armor?

You have to build into it. Increase your strength. Get the perks. Unarmed weapons help. Pretty much everything is gimp damage at the start. At the start you'll want to use firearms sometimes vs difficult encounters. Once you get mid game though you'll destroy everything.

You can get a far higher Strength score outside of power armor than you can get while in power armor. Power armor provides more protection for you, but normal (well, legendary version of normal) armor provides far more damage.

Power armor also can't fully benefit from the last rank of Iron Fist, as the paralyzing attack doesn't work with power armor. You just stand there, and lose the ability to critically hit when wearing power armor.

To piggy back off that, you can't use many of the unarmed weapons while in power armor which limits your damage late game.,

Well that’s the problem you’re still in the early game.

One of my characters Darren the vigilante utilizes unarmed in his build.

Getting as many ranks of iron fist will help towards your dps.

Also be sure you have the best unarmed weapon you can get.

If you have reached diamond city you can get a good one doing the quest the devils due.

Once you have received the death claw egg choose the ending where you take the egg back to the mother and you will be allowed to approach the nest for this time only.

The deathclaw mothers nest contains a deathclaw gauntlet this is the 2nd most powerful fist based weapon in the game.

Also make sure you have lots of special allocated to strength even though iron fist is a rank 1 perk higher strength will add to the damage.

Finally you can collect issues of grognak the barbarian every issue increases melee weapon and unarmed output.

If you want to have real fun with an unarmed build invest into 9 agility and get the blitz perk.

This perk allows you to basically teleport to your opponents if you are using unarmed or melee based damage.

Hmm so unarmed characters are more powerful without power armor? Should I just not use power armor? I already reached diamond city and got a furious power fist from a boss. Is that good? What about protection without power armor?

To give you an idea, Strength increases melee and unarmed damage by 10% a point. With a certain legendary armor ability (an ability that is lost in power armor), you can get your Strength into the 40s. So a 400% increase in melee and unarmed damage. Combine that with yai guai roast, a consumable that gives you 500% melee and unarmed damage (the description in the game is wrong), and you get massive amounts of damage.

As for protection, you get diminishing returns from damage and energy resistance. Going from 0 to 100 points is a far larger increase in protection than going from 600 to 700. Power armor does provide more protection than normal armor, but not by a massive amount. If you do one of the quests for the Railroad (something everyone can do, as it comes before the point you are forced to choose a faction), you can make normal clothing have quite a bit of protection as well, and it stacks with your normal armor (but not power armor).

There are also the annoyances of power armor. Relying on fusion cores (and anything that drains action points also drains fusion cores), not being able to use crafting stations in the armor, some computer terminals can't be used in power armor. Not being able to swim as well.

I greatly enjoyed my challenge run of an unarmed only build, but it really demonstrated a lot of the issues with Fallout 4 as a game: some things just don't play well together mechanically. Unarmed and power armor are a shining example of such dissonance. Power armor disables the ability to stun from the last rank of Iron Fist, frequently glitches out during V.A.T.S. rounds using unarmed, and negates the effects of clothing and armor. I did not watch the show, but I believe whatever scenes you liked in the show were probably based more on the Rule of Cool than any mechanic from Fallout 4.

If you are set on the idea of using power armor and unarmed together, I have a few recommendations. First, the Tesla Bracer mods for your power armor's arms are fun and effective! Like many power armor mods these require a high investment in perks, but I assure you the effect is worthwhile and highly competitive with the hydraulic bracer mods unless you're stacking extreme amounts of strength. I believe, though I'm not sure, they are also affected by the Tesla T-60 power armor pieces available from Automatron (if you have that DLC), for an extra 15% fun and effectiveness.

Second, don't sleep on Pain Train! Yes, Blitz is awesome for closing the gap, but its actual effect is to teleport you into a crowd of your enemies and leave you there while being attacked from all sides. Pain Train, on the other hand, will allow you to charge into the fight while knocking everyone down (depending on perk levels and enemy size), leaving you in control of the tactical situation. You can even continue knocking enemies back down during the fight with short bursts of sprinting.

Third, chems are a power armor user's friend. Absent the strength-improving effects of clothing and armor, your best source of easy damage increases are chems. Best of all, an unarmed build is freed from the tyranny of Jet since the slow time isn't really a big help for an unarmed build; making Jet, and its derivatives, a sometimes drug. PsychoBuff, on the other hand, is an all-the-time, every-time (do it, do it now!) drug for an unarmed build. I recommend against taking the Chem Resistant perk since the best cure for chem withdrawal is more chems, but grab as much Chemist as you can so you don't run out of drug-fueled rage between settlement pit-stops. This will increase your water usage if you're playing Survival mode, but carrying a few extra water is no problem in power armor.

Fourth, consider the explosive shielding for your power armor paint job. It's only a 12% reduction from painting all pieces, but explosives can be a big problem in the early to mid game. It can be even more useful if you're using Lone Wanderer for the 30% reduction in damage; really taking the edge off molotovs, grenades, and exploding cars. Although, if you're playing on Normal difficulty those may not be a significant source of damage.

Fifth, and .. I need you to trust me on this; always, always, ALWAYS carry Med-X with you wherever you go. Poison effects do not care about your power armor. Radscorpions, mirelurk queens, bloodbugs, and other sources of poison will melt your tender flesh without the poison resistance of Med-X. An unarmed build outside power armor can stun enemies to avoid being poisoned (with max Iron Fist) but inside power armor the only choice is to grit your teeth and tank the damage. Without Med-X, you will not survive.

Sixth, Scrounger is an amazing perk for an unarmed build. You won't be using the ammo so it's basically just piles and piles of free caps! And every once in a while you'll find a lucky stack of four fusion cores just waiting for some kind person to give them a home. It doesn't matter how much Luck you have or what level you are, the fusion cores can show up in any qualifying container. A single point gives you a 40% chance to find extra goodies, so if you have a free point then consider putting it in Scrounger.

And some final advice: take any recommendations for Agility tree perks, in conjunction with power armor, with a grain of salt. Blitz is okay but buggy, and Ninja (if I recall correctly) only increases unarmed sneak attacks by the ranged attack value of up to 3.5X; and most others don't do anything for an unarmed power armor build. And sneaking in power armor can be done, but generally isn't worth the effort until you can get Sneak 4 for silent sneaking; that's a lot of levels to earn before sneaking becomes remotely practical. Also, while Agility does increase your action point pool, a power armor user should generally avoid prolonged sprinting or using V.A.T.S. anyway to minimize fusion core depletion.

Just as a note, the fusion core thing has nothing to do with Scrounger. Scrounger has no effect at all on fusion cores, missiles, mini nukes, or any DLC ammo. Finding 4 fusion cores is due to how the random ammo generation for containers works. It rolls 4 times on a table that has varying amounts of ammo, like 1 to 4 rounds or 2 to 7 rounds. When it comes to fusion cores, however, that table only has a single entry - 1 fusion core. So because it rolls 4 times, you get 1+1+1+1 fusion cores.

Oh, I didn't know that; thank you for correcting my mistake.

I do still think the perk is well worth a point in an unarmed build for the caps you can gain selling off the extra ammo it does generate.

I suppose it's all a matter of preference, melee players like myself (with a bat like the Rockville Slugger) routinely sell ammo too. :)

melee build sounds badass as hell!

Why am i a gun nut in this game, hmm i didnt know you could go brawler when i started out!
