If you sent it to Sanctuary there are like 3 doghouses there so search for those he should be chilling in one. Be sure to destroy all but one for next time so its easier to refind it.

If he is indeed there then you made it happen, when you dismiss a companion your offered a selection screen to send them to settlements you have. You can Cancel this and then the companion wil return to the area you first found it.

if you've searched all the usual spots and can't find him. you can place a Vault-Tec Population Management System in one of your settlements.

link it to a generator and then while accessing the terminal select VIP tracker and select show dogmeat which will start overseers most wanted quest which will give you a map marker for his location.
