.44 vs .45 makes no sense to me.
Okay, so... you can take a combat rifle and tweak the frick out of it, and have a decent weapon that shoots .45 bullets.

Then, you find a .44 revolver. And .44 ammo is incredibly rare, and... wow, that stupid little revolver does more damage than a tricked out combat rifle?

That makes no sense, esp since the .45 bullet should be a hair larger than a .44 bullet, you'd think it'd do more damage.

I could never understand Fallout's obsession with making .44s so ridiculously rare and so ridiculously powerful. They treat those things as if they are a fricken desert eagle...

if you want ballistic weapons and ammo (especially the .44) you fight gunners. there is literally a large encampment in quincy.

Edit: the only ammo i seem to find rare (as in cannot be found on majority of traders) is the .45 -70

There is a .44 and some ammo just a stone's throw away from Sanctuary if you know where to look.

Why are you bringing the concept of realism to the subject of game balance?

You ought to understand, long before finding a kid in a fridge, that they're not going for this type of balancing and worldbuilding, and a mil-sim approach to F4 is a bad one.

And that makes little sense. You should read about ammunition, before judging the power of a cartridge based on the diameter of the bullet.

Energy of .45 ACP -
230 gr (15 g) FMJ, Winchester - 483 J

Energy of .44 Magnum -
240 gr (16 g) SJHP Remington - 1,005 J

The diameter of the bullet is largely irrelevant.
.45 ACP is what, 11.5 mm.
8mm Mauser is 8.22 mm, and carries ~4k J.

While I mentioned the .44 being rare, the thread is more about "why do .44s do such much more damage than .45s when that doesn't make sense?"

No, but one would think that they would use basic logic in the game design.

I mean, if we're going to take that approach, then we could just have .22 guns doing more damage than missile launchers. /shrug

I am just waiting for OP to find out that modifying a combat rifle from .45 to .308 lets it deal even more damage :steammocking:

Rule of Todd Howard. It just works.

I've noticed that too, but I figured that the .308 rounds have longer cartridges, thus more gunpowder inside. .44s for revolvers, those are short cartridges.

irl 44s will go through a steel frame door. a 45 will not. most fallout targets represent hard kinetic penetrator targets, and are modeled as such.

.45 is more popular because of its military and police applications, common for semi auto pistols.

.44 is the more powerful round. Its bigger and has more recoil than the .45 and "usually" .44 are revolvers, but there are some semi auto pistols.

It's honestly simple. Bethesda doesn't know who guns work. They've never have. You see it in Fallout 3 and it's even worse in Fallout 4.

.45 is .45 APC which is a pistol round, and not a rifle round. So the fact the Combat Rifle uses it is well just plain stupid. Bethesda did the same thing with the Hunting Rifle and 32 Revolver in Fallout 3.

.44 Mangum is a far more powerful round than a .45APC round.

I honestly find the Assault Rifle less insulting to look at than the Combat Rifle personally. Combat Rifle is a sin.

Sound like the first encounter with BGS' games. The answer is: it just works, and stop asking questions.

If you want to play a more reasonable and grounded, relatively, post-apo FPS- grab METRO games.

https://www.berrysmfg.com/blog/44-mag-vs-45-acp#

I mean, you could just learn about guns and know why. They exaggerated a bit but it's actually true the .44 Magnums are more powerful and damaging than a .45.

It's not really the size of the bullet, but the size of the cartridge that's holding the gun powder that determines the power.

A .308 or 300 Magnum can do even more damage. LOT of gunpowder behind those.

A .270 rifle has a surprising amount of power for such a little bullet, again, because of the gunpowder behind it.

The design of the bullet matters as well, some are made to open up and create more impact surface by flattening out, 44 magnum will flatten like a pancake and leave a massive whole in whatever you shoot. 45s are likely not going to flatten out like that. They're focused more on penetration, as in combat you're often shooting thru armor and obstacles so they need to go in deeper rather than flatten out. And so on.

I think they were going for the Dirty Harry .44 Magnum 'the most powerful handgun in the world'. They just didn't spell it out. Of course Kellogg would have an iconic hand gun.
