by comparison in steam you can scan your game in the event of issues and it can repair damaged files. i don't know if the GOG installers have that functionality as i have never needed to repair GOG installs.
gog also lets you choose game version, so surprise anniversary patch to break all your mods wont affect you on gog
In fact I've bought the same game twice cos first it was on steam, then when i heard it was out on GOG, bought the GOG version and only play that!
If they break all my mods, I'd get it for $10 just to keep playing
