bit radical, try Alt-Enter, this is standard minimise/maximise for a lot of games.

click on display settings. is scale at 100%?
craldark Apr 29, 2024 @ 9:04am
Are you launching from F4SE which is broke, awaiting update?

Launch from Steam. What are your settings in the Options on the Play panel that pops up?

Have you tried borderless windowed with the resolution you want set in the box above that?

This is from Zak707:-

I have 3840x1600 with windows scale to 125% the game initially acted this way:

- When started with windowed mode/borderless active I would get a screen 3072x1280 (considered native). Game start but does not fully cover the monitor, basically 3/4 of it.
- Start with windowed mode/borderless off and got a small box 1280x720 in top left corner I
had to alt-tab into. Then got fullscreen but still at 1280x720 which is horrendous on that type of monitor.

Fix because I did not want to change my desktop scale:

- In Steam in library with Fallout 4 selected. Click Gear icon. Select Manage\Browse local files.
- Go to properties of Fallout4Launcher.exe & Fallout4.exe each by right-click on those files.
- Select Compatibility tab, click button 'Change high DPI settings'
- Check Mark at the bottom of new window 'Override high DPI scaling behaviour' and select 'Application' in drop down.
- Click OK. Click OK Again.
- Do this for both EXE. Start game and in Options your Native should be right.
- And now your can choose either Borderless, Windowed or none and you will get a proper full screen at your native or selected resolution for windowed.

Yes

perhaps your game is not reading/writing the Fallout4Prefs.ini in folder
Documents\My Games\Fallout4

and is using the default Fallout4Prefs.ini
in folder ....\steam\steamapps\common\fallout4\fallout4

to test this
go to that folder ....\steam\steamapps\common\fallout4\fallout4,
edit the .ini file and change the lines

bFull Screen=0
iSize H=720
iSize W=1280

to

bFull Screen=1
iSize H=1080
iSize W=1920

do NOT steam verify game files. if you do, steam will download and overwrite this file.
try the game and see if the game is now full screen.

if the game is now full screen, then the problem is with read/write in the Documents folder.
if the game is still small, have to look elsewhere - graphics card driver maybe. game launcher/game is not reading any .ini file

(the next time you steam verify game files, steam will write over that default Fallout4Prefs.ini with the unedited one)

I’ve done that didn’t do anything
cheshirm Apr 30, 2024 @ 3:22am
so you have 1920x1080 in your .ini files in Documents\My Games\Fallout4
and in the default .ini file. and the game is ignoring all of them.

perhaps wipe your graphics card driver with a utility like Display Driver Uninstaller.
reboot. CLEAN install latest driver. reboot
try game again.

game starts in a small window on my desktop. as soon as I mouse click on it, it goes full screen. if I have anything else displayed like a web browser, I have to alt+tab to bring the game to the top so I minimize everything first then click on the game.

Thank you for posting this. It helped me out because I suffer from poor vision and vision loss and Windows scaling at 100% is just too small for me to see. I have to set my Windows scaling to 150% to see properly. I still think this NEEDS to be fixed by Bethesda officially.

Bethesda cannot fix this.

Windows scaling is a feature by Microsoft Windows. It tricks programs into thinking that the screen is smaller when the scale is above 100%. Windows effectively lies to programs to render into a smaller area to then increase it up, thereby increasing characters and graphics.

This trick works for desktop applications, but fails for games. So you have to use the High DPI Override feature. It exists for this very reason, again thanks to Microsoft. It is a bit hidden though. You need to get to your Fallout4 folder under Steam, i.e.:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\

There you right-click on Fallout4Launcher.exe and open "Properties". Then switch to the "Compatibility" tab. At the bottom you will find an override for High DPI Scaling. Set it to "Application". Then do the same for Fallout4.exe.

This lets the game recognise the true display resolution and stops Windows from cheating.

Ahhh....thanks but Cr4zy3ye already posted the fix and no Bethesda absolutely can fix it. It's a bug with the new update clearly. Somehow they made the game resolution tied to your Windows scaling setting. Windows scaling just makes text and images bigger on your screen, that's it. It doesn't make games bigger or impact them in anyway like that. I have never had this issue happen in dozens of other games that officially support ultrawide natively, including Skyrim and Starfield.
