100% GPU usage + 25FPS normal? (RTX4070)
I AM on Ultra settings, but using 100% of a 4070 feels a little sus. Just wanted to check if anyone has noticed the same, or if there's any settings i should look to turning down. I swing between 60fps and 25fps particularly in areas with trees.

Thanks!

If you play with unlocked FPS it's normal if the GPU is utilized to a 100%. But if it's capped to 60 FPS not necessarily. It depends if the GPU could do much more than 60 FPS or not.

It's also perfectly normal that a GPU is utilized to a 100% that is how they are built.

Sounds normal if you have no cap on frame rates. You've essentially got the card unlocked to soar as fast as it can when ever it can. Mexicola is right though, if you're capped and its still 100% with THAT card, it might not be a good thing. 12gig of vram on fallout?

bruh, 100% is what u want. that means u have a zero bottleneck an yur cpu is able to properly feed the gpu what it needs. if u saw yur gpu at 50 % an yur cpu at 80 % u have a problem. yur totally fine. now if u seen yur gpu at 100% an saw yur gpu temps past 80-90c u have a problem. i to have a 4070 an if im not mistaken no matter the game i play unless i run rtx my temps usually max out at 68c an for the hotspot like 70 ish 74 ish

Thanks for that. I don't know a lot about how a GPU behaves during use so good to know 100% usage is fine.

Thanks. Yea i'm not getting anywhere near consistent 60 fps i'm sitting at between 25-35. If the game is unoptimised, that's fine. But it doesn't seem right given my hardware.

When framerates drop to around 25-30 (which is pretty consistent) it maxes out the card at 99%. The odd time I get 60fps, GPU sits at around 70% usage. For what it's worth CPU sits at around 10% regardless.

I'm not savvy enough to know if this is normal. Just know that 25fps on a 4070 with 12gb VR seems strange.

the order of priority to add fps caps is this

1) fps caps in the game (if this was coded badly, often the case, goto #2)
2) specialk
3) msi afterburner & RTSS
4) there isn't a #4

you only need the game to not go over 15-25ms frametime spikes or something like that. it's up to you what that frametime is as everyone is different

borderless windowed mode was making me run at 25fps switching that off so its fullscreen im locked to 60 now. AMD RX 6600 though.

Make sure to drop shadow distance to medium. That is the heaviest FPS killer in the game. And use HBAO+ instead of SSAO and turn off weapon debris. You should be able to max out everything else and play it in 1440p or 2160p in permanent 60 FPS with a RTX 4070 like that.

I think Godrays can have much of a performance impact too. The game just isn't optimized for modern GPU's. The last gen it worked right with was GTX 10xx series and i think maybe the laptop GTX 16xx series. I got no idea about AMD.

There is a very detailed graphics/performance guide available on the nvidia website:

This has never been an option for me (at least not in the launcher): windowed mode is ticked and greyed out, so windowed mode is forced, and the max resolution the launcher allows is 2560x1440. So the ONLY way the launcher allows me to play the game is windowed + the window takes up half the screen.

I have to manually change resolution and windowed mode in the Fallout4Prefs.ini file.

i have a 6700xt and i have 144 fps caped in amd driver. gpu usage is at 70%. 4070 is about 25% faster so having 25 fps is sus.

what is your cpu? if it has a intergrated gpu and you didn't deactivate in bios, could be that FO4 is using the integrated graphics card instead your 4070...

just an idea, wouldn't be the first time this tip helps :)

If your 4070 is at 100% and only produces 25fps then there is something majorly wrong.

My 3060Ti does >200fps, with 70fps downtown in the worst spots.

You must have something weird going on. Doing any bitcoin mining or video encoding on your GPU while you are playing? Or some messed up ENB setup that has gone wild?

Thanks sdack, nope nothing that wild. It's a gaming machine only.
