No Sound In Game
Just tried playing after the new update. Everything is running great, but I have no sound during gameplay. The sound is fine during the loading FMV and the initial movie opening, but as soon as gameplay starts the sound turns off.

Any ideas what might be causing this?

Check whether you have any special audio software like SteelSeries Sonar or Razor. These can have issues especially with trying to use more than 6 channel audio, i.e. 7.1-surround.

Also check whether you are using HDMI to transport audio to your display. So does HDMI 2.0 only support up to 4K@60Hz. Running 4K at higher refresh rates and using audio with it will fail. If your cable is old, has kinks, or is not properly plugged in will you get problems, too. Some graphics cards only support up to HDMI 2.0. One can try using DisplayPort instead, because many cards can transfer at higher rates with DisplayPort than with HDMI.

When I updated my sound card drivers, I had this issue. When the driver update installed, it removed all my previous sound settings. I had to put them back manually, and that fixed the issue. The reason is that the sound playback is embedded in the FMV at certain volume levels, and sound playback during the game has to be run through different channels with driver-adjustable volume settings.

It happens to me if I alt-tab out of the game for a while. Restarting it makes the sound come back.

Dude stop pushing this agenda. I'm running 2.0 on a 4k panel at native 60hz. I've tried multiple refresh rates and there is no sound after the opening cutscene.

Changing your refresh rate (video) has no effect on your audio. See my post above, make sure your audio drivers are updated, and manually check the driver's volume levels (not the speakers, not the Windows volume controls, but the audio software's volume levels).

I am just listing causes. Different causes can have the same symptom. Transporting audio over HDMI needs additional bandwidth, which at 4K@60Hz gets tight on HDMI 2.0. If GPU, cable, display, or just drivers do not support at least the full HDMI 2.0 specification will one get problems with 4K@60Hz. This is why it has newer standards. It is worth checking them out and crossing them off one's list. This is not just all about one case. Others read here, too, looking for help with their problems.

I'm aware of that. Still, you start with Occam's Razor (the most likely culprit is probably the cause), and then work outward. Start with the sound drivers and then go outward to avoid wild goose chases. There's another new thread with sound-related issues, and their problem was in virtual speaker setups for using high-end sound equipment I'd never heard of, which were crashing the game and had to be turned off.

Occam's Razor is useless in this case. One has to check all, does not matter where one starts. And the simplest things are often the ones that work and not that fail.

This can also be an issue with Windows N-editions, i.e. "Windows 11 Home N". N-editions do not have all media features included and one can get them from Microsoft. These include a range of codecs, including resampling and popular formats.

To find out whether one has an N-edition does one need to go into the Windows settings and look under About.

For more detailed information can one look here about what it contains and some of the symptoms it fixes:

I had this problem till today and fixed it by doing the opposite that fixed my no sound problems befor the next gen update. (Steelseries Arctis 7)
Prior to the update i had to turn erery special setting off, so no sonar and 7.1 surround sound off. But now if i have sonar running and switch to 7.1 surround sound and put arctis 7 game for my audio output (not the chat and not sonar) ererything runs normal.

GUYS I HAD THIS ISSUE AND JUST RESOLVED IT. If you have an audio interface that is. You just have to go to the audio interface's website and download new audio drivers for the product. For example I use Scarlett 2i4 and I just had to redownload their most recent windows 11 version audio driver. I installed and restarted the PC. And now sound works perfectly fine. For this issue I haven't played fallout 4 in like.... 4 months. I really hope this helps.
