I'm guessing you can't turn off updates then?
You'll have to explain this to me like a 5 year old, this is about the only game I play and not that often, it's been a while but I'd like to get back into it, I should think a lot of players are thinking the same after the show. I have a few mods installed and it looks like the update might mess with these. My game hasn't updated yet, says it's queued, is there anyway to stop it? The only options under properties, updates, are something like: keep the game updated, update when I launch and priority update. I did see some discussions about setting it up to load an older version but I didn't understand most of that. And, something about a mod that lets you go back, I'll look into that. Are those my only options or suffer the update? Thanks.

First off make sure in F4 Properties and then under updates you have it selected to only update when launched. Next,

Head over to your Steam library, right-click Fallout 4, and select Properties.
Here, proceed to the Updates tab and check your App ID. It should be 377160.
While simply changing the Automatic Updates settings to “Only update when I launch” can work, this has been known to update the game later.
Now move to the Installed Files tab and pick Browse. It’ll take you to the game’s location. By default, it’ll be “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4.”
Go back by a few folders to “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps” and look for “appmanifest_377160.acf.”
Right-click the file, head to Properties, and check the Read-only box. This disables Fallout 4 auto-updates.

Now, in order to launch the game outside of Steam (since you won't be able to since Steam will still say it's queued for an update)

First, go to Nexus and download F4SE (Fallout 4 Script Extender). Not only is it needed to launch the game, but A LOT of mods need it anyway, you may already have it installed.

https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/42147

Be sure to follow the instructions on installing F4SE, it is what will allow you to launch the game while Steam says F4 requires an update to launch.

BE AWARE*** Every time Steam updates itself you may have to double check and repeat the first step of marking that 377160 app manifest to read only. When Steam updates sometimes it clears those settings and you'll have to mark it read only again.

Sounds like alot I know, but it only takes about 10 minutes. Goodluck!

right click the game in steam library > properties > updates > only update the game when i launch it. then start steam in offline mode, not invisible, the full offline mode where it can't even track your hours played anymore. its the only way to launch the game without updating. i also copied the entire game and made a back up in case steam decides to update it without asking me. I really wish bethesda just used the damn steam games beta feature to make us be able to play the older version. This is modern gaming for you, big companies who only think about money and not about the players.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Instant Caulk - Only update when I launch the game - that I can do, not sure how to start steam in 'offline mode'?

Decidis - Thanks for the long explanation, I'll print that out to follow, not sure if I have the F4SE already. I've used Vortex before for installing other mods, would I choose that option for installing this?

I'll pin it as the answer if it helps :steamhappy:

Just go to GOG and buy it there, its on sale at the moment for $10. It has not updated there yet. Use Galaxy and choose to "rollback" if you do update or just download the install files and store them. That what I do with Skyrim also.

Umm just go offline in steam. That simple.
gavtheman Apr 27, 2024 @ 5:39am
'go offline in steam' do you mean just turn off the internet and then start the game?

But, would it not try to update again when I reconnect?

I would also like to add:
Make a backup of your current Fallout 4 directory in steamapps. Just copy the whole Fallout 4 folder to another drive.
This way you can easily revert/downgrade should steam update the game without you knowing.

Change it to update only when launched and launch the game through F4SE.exe anyway
