Gee. What a surprise. I am tired of having no control over when this is done to me and would love to know how to just stop something that wasn't bethesda's to break, from being broken.
I can't refund this, despite that without my consent it was made unplayable.
1.) Set the Steam client to update the game only on launch, do not allow background updates, and set a time window for updates during a time your computer is off. Also, never start the game again through Steam (do not press the PLAY button), but start it with tools like the F4SE launcher.
2.) Set the manifest file to read-only. The file can usually be found here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\appmanifest_377160.acf. In case you have installed the game elsewhere will you need to search there, i.e. another drive, for the same file. Open the properties of the file and click on the read-only check box and thereby mark the file as read-only. This stops Steam from updating the game. Do not verify the game files after you have done this, or it will unmark the file again. Same with the Steam client updating itself, check it is still unmarked.
3.) Hide the game in your Steam Library. Hidden games do not get updated (never tried it myself, but people have reported this to work).
4.) Copy the entire game directory to somewhere else and run the game from there.
5.) Air-gap your PC or laptop. Simply disconnect it from the Internet and run Steam offline.
Hey. Whatever you're hoping for in your personal or professional life that you want most, I hope you get it. Thank you so much. Genuinely. You were to the point and helpful and that made me happier than anything else anyone could possibly have done in this moment.
Oddly i've done both of these and steam is still trying to update it. Previously i would get an alert whenever i opened steam telling me it was unable to update or validate (cant remember the specifics) Fallout due to the appmanifest but today no alert and an attempt to update. I double checked the file and it's still read only. It's the most annoying ♥♥♥♥
While one person saying something doesn't really count as evidence exactly, it's nice to know that if what you're saying is true that you can STILL have issues if you do everything that everyone says is right and will call you an idiot for not having done.
It's not the most readily available information. Clearly not everyone does this. I don't get all the hostility there and I don't react well to it yknow? I guess the move is to hope that the unreliable method of trying to roll this back myself can at least bring the game back to a functional state for me. Coz if I gotta uninstall I'm just not gonna reinstall it. I don't think it's worth the trouble really. There are better fallout games even lol.
This right here is the most practical IMHO.
Ging onto steam to change you preference means you ar elogging on and the game might update during that time, especially if u have a fast connection.
Several threads on this here on this forum but everyone keeps asking the same question over and over the how-tos get drowned out and are pages back now.
Well if you had any common sense or reasoning the answer was actually included in my reply and I would have been happy to explain how you could stop updates going further if you simply asked me to clarify as I didn't specifically say my method would work now after the update. I can tell what kind of person you are from your reply and I truly hope you continue to be miserable and may your Fallout 4 constantly update and break your game forever. Maybe in the future take a sec and think about how you reply to someone trying to help you out and giving you an idea on what worked for them.
I know it was hard for you to hear someone else actually prepared ahead of time and can still play the game but instead of asking, "Hey, do you think this method would work going forward?" you just crinkled up your nose and said in a Christian Bale voice, "Ohhhh good for you!!!!!!!!"
Sorry your so miserable. Take Care!
P.S- If anyone else actually needs help I can better explain what worked for me. Id be happy to try and help if i can though Sdak above seems to have quite a few good different options including the one I listed.
Somebody else managed to do what you are offering already in this thread without being so passive aggressive.
Have a good day, thank you for literally not contributing one single useful thing.
