CRASH FIX: TURN OFF WEAPON DEBRIS (details inside)
Keep crashing when you first run out of the house?
If you have an RTX card (most of us do), read below:

In the game launch window, turn off weapon debris

Then go to My Documents > My Games > Fallout4

Open Fallout4Prefs.ini
Ctrl + F and search for NVFlex
Change values to 0 on the following lines:

[NVFlex]
bNVFlexEnable=0
iQuality=0
bNVFlexInstanceDebris=0
bNVFlexDrawDebris=0

Save and restart the game. Hope this helps during this embarrassing spectacle for Bethesda.

EDIT: God rays may sometimes be the culprit too, but this isn't usually the case. If it is, disable god rays

Same here, but I've heard of cases where it also contributes, but I'll edit the post.

You don't had to do it just because of me, just wanted to give some feedback!:steamhappy:

Also this is just a simple fix to one of crash culprits, usually if you're crashing in the opening sequence, it's due to weapon debris
I just picked up a new rig about 2 weeks ago. Installed Fallout 4 with all my old mods. Would not work at all. Disabled all mods. Nope. Uninstalled and re-installed with all DLCs and left vanilla. NO luck at all. Every time I try to start FO4 it loads maybe 5 sec at most of the intro vid or the random SPECIAL vid and crashes. I have weapon debris turned off and still no luck. Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

And you also have double checked the windows updates.?

also a lot of people use GOG to play with old mods. also depends i guess on the mod also make sure if your mods are Steam Compatible. with fallout 4 version of Steam.

other then that i am not sure.

Leaving a Note Here

Check whether you've also updated F4SE and if you're using buffout it needs to be correct for your install.

Are you trying to load an existing save? Have you tried making a new game with ZERO presence of mods anywhere first? Nuking your install from orbit might help if you have older mods that simply won't work.

And as something stranger says, you might in addition to the virus scanner and firewall, make SURE that onedrive is not touching these files either.

i say its 100% Recommended because well for me it kinda helps me because i quick save to much and kinda found out the hard way after not doing that if u dont add it.. lol and u save the game. it doesn't save lol so i try to always Recommend it haha

You need to manually save more, then, it's something that is quite easy once you train yourself to remember "pause the game, save the game" whenever you're going to do something important, or if you've been building in settlements a while, etc!

Stranger and Zekiran, Thanks for the suggestions! I think that I will start with OneDrive, that may be the issue. Will keep trying and post here if I find a solution (or not).

I'm pretty green on the Steam side of things. I'm an old gamer from way back. Like Doom, Quake & Duke Nuke'm. I hope I'm not breaking protocol at all. Is there a way I can direct message so I am not flooding the discussion? If that is not an option, OK. Just wanted to be fair to others in the chat and to you as well. I just need adivce to nudge me in the right direction.

If you need to make your own thread, just make sure to subscribe to it (in the text box where you type a comment make sure it's ticked subbed) and add any other questions that relate to your game here!

Searching in the steam forums is... mehhhhhh at best, so I'd suggest if you're searching for specific fallout 4 stuff, use google and add "steam forum" to your search to find threads more easily and then you can use your steam browser to actually read and comment here.

Honestly the bulk of the regulars here myself included are VERY happy to help you get your game running. Bumping not-really-old threads like this is fine, but if you have further questions or issues that aren't covered by THIS thread, create another with your detailed problem and we'll help there.

Zekiran, your comments (as well as Something Stranger Than Water's are greatly appreciated! I will start a new thread.

This happened to me when I tried to open it after transferring to my new rig.
Go into the launcher. Click Options. Check the box for windowed/borderless.

Close launcher. Restart launcher.
After the game starts you can quit and remove the windowed/borderless option and it should work fine.
