Carbine-ish thing that's got the Legendary Effect of doing more VATS damage or less VATS cost don't remember, then I go with a Legendary Explosive Double-Barrel Shotgun for close but not that close, then a Automatic Radium Rifle with an Explosive Legendary Effect for when I need a lot of heavy damage headed down range, took some time to gather those weapons though:)
Oh it definitely doent help that patrols and respawns are equipped with rocket launchers and mini nuke launchers. That plaza had 3 legendary raiders in it. I had just started hitting it and I heard the whistling of a mini nuke coming in. I thought to myself "thats a mini nuke??" and bolted to get our of the way. I took a glancing hit, but Curie caught it like a football heh.

the other legendary had a freezing quad barrel missile launcher.

The third one had a pipe grenade launcher but he was inside the plaza luckily, not with the other 2 outside.

The Mini Nuke is the worst on survival the moment I hear it I run only chance you got is maybe some cover, next worst thing for me is grenades and Missile Launchers, although the times an enemy uses their legendary weapon on me is also bad mostly the Gauss Rifles.

That legendary with the pipe grenade launcher was a bastich. when i dropped him and picked up his pipe grenade launcher to take out the rest, one of his buddies shot the damn grenade in the air as I fired it. Took out both arms of my power armor.

Love the fact that raiders and hostiles get more difficult the higher level you get. I cleared out the Mechanist long ago, and now I'm starting to see robo-brain patrols again.

TBH I've died the most to my own Legendary Explosive Double-Barrel Shotgun more then anything else, enemy jumps out I fire they're two feet from me I blow up along with them, or I'm moving from cover and there is something next to me as I fire and I blow up, It happens a lot less now but it still happens about every 20ish hours of play.

Heh. Buddy of mine just picked up his first exploding auto shotgun. I'm waiting to hear him tell me how he killed himself.

See I like the Double-Barrel because it gives me less chances to kill myself, I also just picked up a pipe rifle with the Exploding legendary effect so chambered in 38 and modded for Aromatic fire I may replace my Radium Rifle but I like the Volkssturmgewehr look and with so little real world looking weapons in Fo4 I tend to lean toward real world weapons.

If I can give a bit of advice about fallout, don't go south until you are at least level 15. Explore the top left corner of the map, gather loot and weapons, upgrade your armour and guns (gun nut and armourer, lockpicking advanced for ammo/stims), and quick save when its quiet, regularly. It will make going south a lot easier, saying that if I run into enclave right now.. I will run away screaming please don't kill me. I always make sure I have a pistol (for bugs/hounds etc), shotgun (for close up tough enemies) and long range (for unreachable enemies) with me. I regularly clear out the lonely chapel just south west of sunshine tidings co-op/federation ration stockpile for loot. Also read terminals you come across, you get map updates on the fly.

One of the things I love about open world games is that where you start the game, you have so many resources around to help you level up, take advantage of them. It's a rule of thumb in any open world game really, the further you explore the tougher the enemies are.

All of that said, I do get the frustration with the enclave, they can come out of nowhere and just wipe you in seconds, but when I think back to when I first played fallout, I was just running along listening to tunes and died so much. I'm still dying but keep at it.

Fudgemuppet actually did a next-gen beast build so I tried it out. Get the PA from the Museum of Freedom. You can then quite EASILY take out the PA trooper at the enclave outpost. Work your way across the top edge of the map with the fatman and mini-nuke picked up from the Robotics Disposal Ground east of Sanctuary. The X-02 hellfire trooper at the outpost won't know what hit 'im while you're across the river at The Slog, and then the remainder isn't much worry. You thought starting out at low level with the free PA at the Museum was bad? Hell, by level 10 you can be wearing maxed out X-02 and using a heavy flamer, fatman, and plasma rifle then practically beelining to the glowing sea to just complete the travesty by grabbing the Tesla. Got that guy to level 20 and the game is effectively DONE. I just sold off the grenade launchers as being pretty underpowered by comparison. Decided to go back to my sedentary diplomat settlement-building build for a while.

That. Although I think it needs updating currently?
It's working OK, the "Control NG Start" mod. No update was needed it seems. Sorry I haven't updated the comments yet.

Yeah this is exactly what is so idiotic about it. When you aren't expecting it, it totally kills you out of the blue. Once you know to expect it, you can then metagame it to get end-game gear before you're level 5. Either way totally unbalanced. A terrible introduction for new players and long time returning players.

I play on survival and just had this happen to me. Thought I would take an hours nap, and there is a dude in power armor inside the small room I am in. The game won't allow me to move an inch before I get hit with flames from hell and die instantly. I have no idea where my last save was, as sleeping is the only way to save. This game is seriously trying not to be played.

So if you are getting Enclave ambushes at level 10, then it means you picked up the Devil Armor. You simply soft-locked your character by doing it too soon. You need to get to Suggs in Cambridge, do his quest, and get the chinese grenade launcher. You can easily defeat the Hellfire suits and ambushes with the grenade launcher. Also, you can beat them if you have a kneecapper weapon and make it an auto-fire. They will go down pretty quickly, and you may even be able to shoot out the core and have them exit the suit before killing them. I haven't tried it, but it should be easy to knock out the core with them already disabled.

If you want to cheat the kneecapper just to get out of the soft-lock, you can put one on a weapon with:

(grab weapon from the ground)

Kneecapper is one of the most OP legendaries in the game if you can make it an auto weapon, so happy happy joy if you get one. I used to throw them all into a locker because I didn't realize what I had. The only ones I've found on my current game were on melee weapons :P
