Why isn't reverting to an old version a thing in this game?
Fallout 4 is my first heavily modded bethesda game. And for a game where a percentage of the playerbase is using a modded playthrough. Dont you think it's a good idea for us to be able to choose to stay on an old update and still be able to play while mod authors do their thing for their mods to be compatible on a recent patch/update?

Minecraft has this feature and so does bannerlord. So how come this doesn't?

You can disable updates. And if you launch the modded game through f4se, you can play on the old version. Just dont click on the steam update button. Im still using the unpatched version and all of my saves working fine with all of my mods.

If you're looking for consumer friendly I suggest Larian games. Baldur's Gate 3 is AMAZING.

If it's heavily modded you should be launching Fo4 through a mod manager with F4SE, completely bypassing the game launching through Steam (thus not updating).

They could have just include the old version in the beta menu. Todd just simply doesn't care.

I'm using vortex with F4SE installed. But I'm getting an error that the versions are unsupported. Is it too late from here if the base game was already updated?

Steam is the issue. They force you to update.

Example: When Atlus changed the requirements for Persona 4 Golden from Win7 minimum to Win8 minimum, then made my game unplayable without forcing me to use the abomination of Win8. If you launched the game, it would auto-update. There is no way to turn that off and leave the old game intact. Steam is the cause, and unless you use mods (like F4SE), there is no cure.

Another example is the Saint's Row series update requiring an Epic account to play, and there was no way to revert to the version that didn't require it. Yet more games stolen from me by Steam (and I'll be damned if I install anything from Epic).

"it just works" to some degree we are at fault, than again seeing him during tga made me smile
I have never run the game through steam, always through MO2 with the Script Extender, my game updated after I logged out earlier today even though it is set to not update unless run. Sadly sometimes folks just get screwed no matter what they do.

Steam is not the issue. I have games on steam that I can revert to older versions easily.

Yep. But if you had "DO NOT UPDATE UNTIL GAME IS LAUNCHED" set in the steam FO4 settings I am not sure how your game updated.

This is so sad

The issue of update policies of different platforms could have been adressed years ago, e.g. by providing a launcher that itself manages versions (and even mods). I used to have cracked copies of the game, even though I owned it, to preserve my modded playthroughs, which in turn can take a lot of extra space on my drives. Stupid me, not knowing about the update, thought that after such a long time, making a cracked copy or going other ways to prevent updates wasn't necessary anymore, when I installed the game a couple of days ago. Now this, and the widescreen support isn't even done properly...

i backed up my fo4 folder wasting like 30 gb and made sure it won't update. If i double click the game by mistake it'll update lol otherwise i run via ModOrganizer Fs4e or w/e and it launches fine without updating.

Then again I'm using a mod pack called Magnus Opus, installed VIA WABBAJACK which i read has an option where like if i were to update my game now, it'd still run fine due to wabbajack and how it configured the game/modpack, but manual modding etc would prolly get screwed by this update 100% especially if they rely on scripting.

This update honestly makes no sense to me, all feels like a PR stunt.

Setting the beta branches on Steam requires a manual action from the developer.

On GOG, you can do it yourself via GOG Galaxy (limited range, though) or just not update in the first place. Your software is yours and yours only forever (as long as you have the hardware to store and run it).
