Is it worth updating the game?
I'm playing with some mods and wanted to know if an update is worth it? It would be nice to say what would be positive and what would be negative

Is it worth updating, you ask?
Is it even possible to prevent the update from downloading and installing, is my question!

Obvious answer is yes, there are even several different ways of achieving it.
1. You can change game configuration on Steam to only update on launch and then launching the game through Modorganizer/F4SE to avoid triggering update on Steam
2. You can set game manifest to read-only (prior to update release) so Steam won't be able to check for updates
3. You can backup the game, upgrade and then replace the files with old ones and Steam will thing you are up to date.

Yup. My game will never update! Unless I let it. Frack Bethesda!

Don't do it!
I updated, but didn't want it .... now all mods are unplayable, and so the game is. It's a joke that many bugs and problems, which are known by everyone were completly ignored with the ... "patch". Mods which solve Bethesdas bugs and problems are now gone.

So NO, don't update this ♥♥♥♥.

Okay, option 2 isn't going to work anymore, because you can't do anything prior to the update release, once the update has already been released.
And 3. seems a lot of work and might result in a big mess, since the update has already started downloading, and is now only paused/...
So 1. it is... Good thing I already had to start through F4SE if I wanted certain mods to work.
So thanks for the info, man.

If YOU tell me how to STOP it from happening!

If only you would include info on how you achieved that...

I couldn't see a difference. Crashed on first load, reset the vid settings fixed that. Buncha new missions auto-added. That's it so far.

Don't update for a long time. Just rename your current fo4 folder. Update the game, delete the updated game folder. Rename your old FO4 folder to Fallout 4. Let other people test for you.

And why did you launch the game from the Steam Client? If you're using mods, you know you're not supposed to use the client.

I disabled the game's auto-update. I then went into offline mode and then back online with the game now running. I have no idea if this always works. At least I want to finish my level

Not at all, you play the same game like before, but your mods ruined. Up to you though.
MagicMarker Apr 25, 2024 @ 10:29am
So now one question remains... when the update has already started downloading, and you halt it, is there any way to remove the downloaded part from the system without damaging the game?

Here's the rub... if you just open Steam, and had not yet set the game to only update if you launch it, it will auto-update even if you're NOT running the game. Not everyone knew beforehand that this was coming and making a mess. So not everyone was prepared to stop it from happening.

The game is an old well-worn wandering one...for as many hours as you can stand to listen to the oldies and/or classic music radio stations entire programs repeat and the getting attacked every three minutes concept Todd Howard still banks on to this day. And now has made into into a tv show story I've never experienced in 70-something hours of depressing trekking through a dismal as ♥♥♥♥ ruins of once upon a time dwellings broken concrete trails and rutted ruined scrub land. Mr. Howard is one of nine executive producers (there are as many co-executive producers).

It's really lonely stuff, and involves 1) walking, 2) paranoia, 3) constant loot searching, and 3) jump scares. There is no point in doing it past 50 hours. I'll try Fallout 76 now. It was recently (might still be) on sale.

All mods work fine for me apart from F4SE mods, and my performance has increased with god rays. Had no issues at all.
