The Castle, dead Minuteman
Guys trying to take the Castle for the Minutemen but no matter what I do one always dies.

On an old thread someone said to just ignore Preston and rush in yourself. Well this doesn't work now - as soon as you shoot the first Mirelurk Preston and the gang all rush in suicidally even if you attack with a silencer from the opposite end of the fort and with no companions or mines.

The other advice was to lay mines where the queen spawns - this doesn't work now - she spawned in the ocean and rushed in through a damaged wall. I think in fact one Minuteman was killed in friendly fire when a hatchling triggered a mine that was meant for the queen...

Final advice was to gather up 3 (Preston being immortal) power armours and leave them in the centre and as soon as the Minutemen took damage they'd get inside them. This didn't work because after the Queen dies Preston tells them to clear out the eggs inside and they do they dismount (and die, what else).

I have no idea why I want them all to live, if someone studied psychiatry perhaps they can offer an insight suggest some meds. Things I have yet to try - reload from before talking to Preston, but this puts me about an hour back, drop to Easy difficulty, put fat men / miniguns / missile launchers in the Minutemens' inventories / convert to another religion and pray to that god instead for a good outcome.

Mine advice does work, drop them where the wall is broken, the queen always path through there. A few bottlecap mines is instant kill

Or use console commands to give the minutemen 900000 hit points and start working on that mental problem you've got

Press ~ KAH if you don't mind the dark side.

Go back to your save and do it on your own, don't talk to Preston about taking the castle, talk to him after you have taken it, if you have the guardian modded at the workbench as a rifle you can kill the queen easily by using the the building as cover, otherwise use mines and whatever else you have. Least thats how I do it, and the other plus is you get all the mirelurk meat to cook, good for caps if they are not there.

They are replaceable and won't matter much once you get rolling with real settlers.

Oh well, I guess I'll move on then. But if this were New Vegas for that I'd get an epilogue slide along the lines of:

Ernest, the son of Marsha the Minuteman who was horrifically mauled to death by a Mirelurk Razorclaw in a botched raid on the Castle by the Sole Survivor became a violent sociopath obsessed with avenging the injustice. Blinded by rage he broke into Parsons where he found an ancient orb which he soon discovered had immense power. After intense study in the lab he used the orb on all who had pledged support to the Sole Survivor killing them and reanimating them as feral ghouls doomed to forever wander the wasteland.

This.

And if the dead bodies do not despawn, drag them down to the water.

What are "real" settlers?

What are "real" settlers?

The ones who show up with your settlement beacon on.

I can say that by using "what's your name" mod, while the Minutemen there ARE considered part of the Settlers in quantity, you cannot rename them from Minuteman - literally everyone else that may become a settler (who doesn't have a real name like codsworth or nick valentine) CAN be renamed with that mod.

"Real" settlers = farmers and wanderers who show up thanks to your beacons. Minutemen aren't real settlers in THIS specific case. They can be safely assigned to your defenses and ignored forever. If you lose one, it's no big deal someone else will be along in a moment.

I always go to the castle and clear it before Preston asks me. Usually long before. No collateral damage.

It's usually the Queen which gets them. Unless you skip the entire quest anyway and then use a mod to clean the place up.

Have the gang wait while you draw out the mirelurks. Sneaky yourself around to the right along the water up to the first big hole in the wall, then carefully attract and lure the mirelurks out through the hole and kill them one at a time. Once they're all gone the gang will move in and you'll proceed to the "destroy the egg mounds" part of the quest.

When the Queen arrives, you need to pop some Med-X for the poison resist then aggro the queen and maintain aggro. Rotate her around so she's not blowing poison on everyone. Keep yourself healed, shoot for the legs, don't let the Med-X wear off.

Win. Everyone lives.

That is a good strategy on easier levels.

But on Very Hard? I can't see anyone doing it unless they are high leveled and have some powerful weapons. On Very Hard, even with some poison resist, she will take you down very fast.

I go into one of the rooms with the openings and it is a back and forth, shoot and duck back away from the opening strategy. But I like to do it at a fairly early level when I do it.

I play on hard, anything higher isn't very much fun to me. Works good, never had a problem. I kill the queen in five or six shots, don't take much damage. You dance her around the radio station keeping it between you and her and just strafe out to take your shots. Around level 20 or so usually. If anyone dies I reload and do it again, but haven't had to do that in a long time.

I've taken to just taking the Castle before Garvey suggests it, or, if he does, tell him we're not ready, and then go take it anyway. I then post up at the hole in the wall where the target for the artillery is, and take out any eggs I can with a scoped weapon, along with the mirelurks. At Queen time, I hide inside and move from doorway to doorway until she's dead. Mines are hyper effective, both against her, and any babies she decides to launch at you, if she gets time to do that.
