Building glitch with a post using X Box controller

Hi.
Hope this makes sense.
Having real difficulty building with the XBox controller. (I`m on a PC).
I find I`m zoomed in too close to some parts I want to build, and can`t see where I`m putting them.
Getting plagued with red lines on things that don`t fit.
Watched youtube videos about a glitch, but how do I do this using a X Box controller?
