This is probably controversial, but I think the younger people prefer FO4 because they cannot get over the graphics of FONV.
I play FO4 because I like the settlement building, and I play FONV because I like the storytelling.
F4 has a "looter/shooter" mentality baked right in, with easy to skip dialogues, can't be locked out of any quest (until final faction chapters). And "holds you hand" through out the game just by game design choices (admittedly, this not a bad thing in itself)
FNV is an RPG. It tells a story and has lots of repeatability because its an RPG and doing one thing can lock you out of another part of the game. However, its also a lot "rougher" of a game and has way more "jank"to it because of the 18 month development cycle, and very outdated engine they had to work with. It also looks gawd awful compared to fallout 4.
So... What do you want to play?
Looter/shooter? or RPG?
what matters more?
Looks or Story?
if each wouldnt take like a 150h id say both. :D
among all the fallout games, fallout4 is the goofball,
its what justcause is for indiana johnes.
like just in the tv show you get a power armor like 10min into the game.
in older games thats endgame gear
f4 is a ♥♥♥♥ ton of fun, but immersion n lore wise its doesnt make much sense.
new vegas is true to the original games. lore wise and flora/fauna wise.
NV is not as crowded as f4,
population wise, in f4 you gotta question wether the nukes ever droped at all.
It's also worth playing both game DLC"s.
New Vegas = Main meal.
Fallout 4 = desert.
New Vegas first cos Fallout 4 will make you too lazy (and think New Vegas can't possibly be better) to go back to New Vegas and then you'll miss out on all the really good stuff hidden within it.
"Looter shooter" elements aren't mutually exclusive with being an RPG. Both are RPGs. Both have decent stories ( Though, yes, NV is better ). I'd describe the distinction as more "hard core" vs "casual".
FO4 = Graphics & Gunplay, barely any rpg which is dumb.
