Settlement building is the best thing in any Fallout game
And I don't care who says otherwise. Normally, building and being creative isn't my thing but it just works so well in this game. It fits perfectly the theme of the game where people are scrapping together fledgling communities in a harsh apocalyptic climate against all odds of survival. It also gives you a reason to scavenge and hoard all the random junk you find out in the wasteland, and even gives a use to most of it. The base game is pretty okay but I spent more time on settlements than anything else. It's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done in a game.

I was really surprised at the different possibilities of structures and gadgets. I turned a depressing, desecrated alley into a three story loft with a penthouse and elevator access. I created a fully working factory at a drive-in using conveyors, sorters, and even logic gates. I got to make my very own vault plan in an underground cave. But my favorite thing that I did was convert an unremarkable, dingy looking beach into a bustling boardwalk using some barn parts and Nuka World assets. Shops, bathrooms, an arcade, a clinic, the works. And right behind that, I built a two story beach house for the settlers to sleep in with an open ocean view balcony and a rooftop patio with a bar and grill. It almost made me wish I was living in the wasteland too.

The building mechanics may be a little rough and quirky but I really would like to see them bring this back in TES 6, whenever that comes out. Imagine building houses, villages, or hamlets and bringing back NPCs and followers to live there. It would be like Hearthfire only good. I'm looking forward to seeing that than more than anything else in the game to be honest. I haven't played Fallout 4 in like 3-4 years and I still think about it.

100%.

The challenging part is a perimeter fence, if you choose to do it.

Far harbor I used semi trailers for fences for a good chunk. I enjoy that you can choose different styles for building, and even have pre-made buildings and barns.

I am sorry for the absolute hate this thread is going to get, but know you have people that like the building as well.

You arent alone.

Try 7 Days to Die. That lets you build and repair structures way better than fallout 4 does. The only snag is no settlers to assign to tasks in that game.

I feel similarly. Love taking break doing that. Killing time between killing bad harmful stuff hee hee. :-) Amazing building you've done !! Salutatory congrats on that !! :-)

I played 7D2D for a very long time. Fallout 4 blows it away. The Fun Pimps can keep their crap to themselves.

When did you last play it? They keep improving the game and adding new content that isn't locked behind a DLC, unlike Bethesda.

You used the word "Improving"

Alot of us would disagree with that. Taking things away and making it easier isnt "improving"

The best thing is that if your settlement looks like trash because you did a bad job, it's still lore appropriate!

I never bother with fences. i tend to just make sure I have enough defense to limit the number of attacks. And arm the settlers of course.

They broke the perk system. I know.
But there have also been actual improvements to the game besides the times they have gone backwards.

Fallout 4, similar in the aspect that some players think the last update was the worst thing that ever happened to it.

I haven't played this game so I don't know what it's like, but I just want to emphasize what made Fallout 4's settlements work so well is the way they synergized with the main game. It not only added a two way gameplay loop in improving your settlements and getting better gear and supplies as a reward, but it also played off of Fallout's extensive and colorful worldbuilding. I'm not even sure the settlement mechanic would work the same way in another game. It's kind of like the cabaret clubs in the Yakuza series. The minigames are clever and addicting and a work of genius, but I don't really have any desire to play them as a standalone game. They work within the context of the main game by rewarding your interaction with the game world and connecting with the game characters.

FO76 doesn't allow settlement building just camps. Some people build "mini dollhouses". And some are very good.

As always there is a Catch 22. Acquiring all the parts can be difficult if not impossible.

But that's what nextgen FO4 could have been.

The problem with fallout 4 is you cannot fix up existing structures or remove them completely and start again. They have had 10 years to fix that and haven't. The structure building in 7 Days to Die is way better than what fallout 4 could have been. But also Fallout 4 has some things that 7D2D doesn't have, like settlers.

I don't think it's the best thing. I ignored settlement building my entire first game (except what I had to do in the tutorial). Barely bothered with it 2nd game. And finally started doing something 3rd game and got thoroughly annoyed cos EVERYONE does nothing and expects you to do everything.

Sturgess: "Please make our beds cos we can't be arsed!"

Me: "Can't you do that?"

Sturgess: "Well you asked didn't you?"

Me: "I didn't ask to be your slave!" *Leaves for good*

Only Sim Settlements got me into doing some building cos the NPC people actually started making an effort.

p.s. Also, I'm not one of those build all the time guys. I will do what's needed then move on. It just doesn't attract me like it does some of you folk.

It is ok the first time doing it but the system is really flawed. That settlement attacked especially is beyond infuriating. It is game breaking. There are many people just totally ignore the settlement because of it. There is no blueprint function either. Not to mentioned you need to resort to some glitch item placement if you dont use any mod. Perfect? Hell no. But im not gonna lie that it is one of the charm of FO4.
