But briefly: You can install midgame, but it's best to install in a fresh game. I doubt it works with the launcher. I used it with Vortex which was fine.

This is what I would install through the Bethesda mod launcher ingame but are these mods already up to date and work with the next gen update?
I do not know if they're up-to-date. Check the mods sites. I have avoided Beth's updates. It should tell you. Or look at its chat.
The mechanist lair was a huge pile if junk with all the pathways blocked and glitching out.
I use SS1 now which works more simply but it does the job I want (just leaving it to settlers to do stuff). I don't need all that SS2 story stuff which just seems to add to more issues.
you can play the whole of SS2 without doing a single story quest.
