alt tabing makes me half to exit and restart
so i genuinly dont know if this is to mods or not i just picked the game back up after how ever long since game originaly came out and decided to try a few minor mods. how ever now when i try and alt tab to look something up and come back my cross hair is perma in bottom right quadrant and hitting esc to bring up menu zooms in like i changed my aspect ratio. tho rest of game is fine so far if noticed. only way to fix this is to exit game and reboot .one time steam itself broke went black screen and no amount of trying to restart fixed it had to reboot comp. any one else come across this issue if so can i fix somehow with out resstarting if not well fk i guess

If you have not touched the .ini-files of the game in a while, but updated your hardware, drivers, Windows, etc. then you should either delete the .ini-files or rename then to ".old", and create new ones.

If the original game launcher fails to detect your hardware (because the launcher is getting old) can you also try using GeForce Experience (in case you have an Nvidia card) and let it optimise the .ini-files. Or you can use Bilago's Launcher and Config Tool and modify the .ini-files in depth to your needs.
Bilago's Launcher (not really a mod) https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/102

If you have started using a controller in recent times then you want to unplug it and disable controller support for Fallout 4 in Steam and in the game's settings.

Alt-tabbing doesn't necessarily get along well with this game.

SOME people experience it in a positive manner (where it can help their load times). But I know myself on the computer I'm using but on a prior windows 7 install, it would absolutely stop working correctly when alt-tabbing.

The basic solution is to "not" do that, overall. It's never been consistently able to alt-tab for a significant number of people.

Also you say "a few minor mods" but don't say WHICH mods.

No mod is "minor". They all stand an increasing chance of screwing with your game code and how you play, so knowing which those are is very important.

Hopefully it's a quick and easy fix as sdack suggests. But if not, you might want to try looking at those mods and where you put them as well as your game, on which drive, etc.

uh im fairly new to mods in general and not the most technoliterate so most of that doesnt make to much sense to me but
i didnt manualy alter noting i went to nexus mods downloaded the vortex mod manager and used that as for the mods used .. new sanctuary , restore catle the one with the quest and equiped armor weight reduction . but if zeks saying game in general doesnt liek alt trabing even unmoded i think imma have to just assume im one the unlucky bstrds whos comp wont let me do that

They can easily mess things up, even though a lot of them won't. Modding is still 'at your own risk' so always read the mod's description and known issues, because sometimes bugs kind of come with them. :)

What is your system like? If you could go to the top of your Steam library window and click HELP > SYSTEM INFORMATION, you can easily find your full system specs. You can copy and paste the list here, it doesn't contain any identifying info so it's safe to do so, and will help troubleshoot in the future. Mainly we'd be looking at what video card you're using, whether the drivers are either 'correct' or 'up to date' (sometimes, 'new' doesn't mean 'right'), and if there are other obvious issues.

you have
DirectX Driver Version: 31.0.15.3623
Driver Date: 6 8 2023

I have
DirectX Driver Version: 31.0.15.5176
Driver Date: 3 1 2024

probably wont make any difference if you update your nvidia driver but worth a shot.

I have installed games on win me with a radeon graphics card, on win 7 and 10 with nvidia 550 and 750ti, and on win 11 with an nvdia 3060ti. alt+tab worked on all of them.

others, as zekiran stated above, have all kinds of issues/cannot get alt+tab to work at all on same windows/same hardware

alt+tab not working on this game ONLY? alt+tab working in other apps/games?
try a new game and see if same thing happens.
try a new VANILLA (NO MODS) game and see if same thing happens.
try older saves and see if alt+tab works or not.

This. Just quit to the desktop and do your search. Should not be a big deal to reload the game again. It takes less than a min on a SSD with my system.

ding ding ding it seems we have a winner thx woulkda never even considered game was running as different ratio then monitor. made them match alt tabed like 4 times no issues so far
Zekiran Mar 8, 2024 @ 2:12pm
Awesome, that's good to know.

Since the game IS old, there's always a chance that any newer computer even if it's not 'new-new' will have resolution issues.
