Funny thing was I got so close with my two companions. I wonder if that portal door had worked if they could have got in with me.
I too generally speaking want to punch Father in the face. Not quite as much as Maxson but still. I didn't bring no child into the world to be like either of them. :D
I would look into the companion mods, I don't use a console but there MIGHT still be one or two for letting them enter the Institute. But overall it's one of those "they stay behind for REASONS" whatever that reason is (no idea, since really, you should be able to drag them along...).
