How to assign a settler to defense?
I find a settler, in build mode, and while settler is highlighted, I cannot see a "command" option as so many people describe. Food gets assigned automatically for you, but how do you manually assign them?

you build a resource that requires a settler assigned to it, such as a guard tower, highlight the settler, hit E (your menu at the bottom of your screen will change), highlight the resource and hit E. You'll see a message that the resource is now assigned.

Step by step with pretty pictures http://www.accelerated-ideas.com/fallout4/how-to-assign-workers-in-settlement.aspx

You will sometimes have to wait a while while they're reassigned so it can look like nothing is happen. Give it 30 seconds or a minute if the Settlement is really busy.

If you build the guard towers before new settlers arrive, they *should* auto-assign to any vacant guard posts.

In build mode you see a red person silhouette on an object if it needs a settler assigned and doesn't have one, a green silhouette if someone is assigned.

If the settler belongs to your settlement then you should see something like this:

You then press ENTER or E and walk to a guard post, a food plant or a scavanging station, and press ENTER or E again to assign them to it.

If you do not see this then perhaps try to provide more detail, such as what mods you are using.

You'll know the resource is assigned, because your defense or food will start increasing after the resource is assigned....even if you don't see the Settler actually doing that assigned task yet.

also a few settlers aren't assignable due to their function such as maybe named npcs, etc or they might be for a future quest. Find another settler that you can assign.

If you have the Vault-Tec DLC, you can build the Population Management System terminal and assign people via that, instead of walking around and trying to find your settlers and assign them one by one.
Another very simple solution is to build a bell. Ring the bell and all settlers come to it. You can then easily review and change their job assignments, their equipment, etc.

Hmmm build a bell. Might try that.

I just found it a bit strange that settlers do seem to be doing the right things, but that assigning a settler to the farm when the farm is like 50 yards away is a little perplexing with no actual UX clues going on. Will muddle along until I am able to raise my character charisma, laving low charisma has limited this angle of the game a little bit.

You get to have 10 settlers plus whatever your Chrisma stat is, which you can increase with clothing even when it is just temporarily. If you want it still bigger then wait until you get to vault 88.

With the Vault 88 DLC does one get to own an entire vault, which comes with an increased settler limit. Iirc 20+Charisma, and one gets to build a settlement inside a huge underground cave system.

If it is about assigning a settler to multiple posts then you can do this, too. A settler assigned to a post will seek up to three unassigned guard posts and patrol between them. So you can put down 3 guard posts per guarding settler and do not have to use a settler for every corner you want guarded on your settlement. Simply let them walk patrols.

It's is quite hard to control farming work precisely, and if you want precision it's quite frustrating. When you assign a settler to farm an unassigned plant, you're basically saying "go farm this plant and 11 others you just pick for yourself".
