HELP ME! Playing FO4 with Japanese Voice and Text, but also mods?
I want to play Fo4 completely in Japanese: voice, text, subtitles, etc.
I also want to mod the hell out of this game, like I normally do.
Unfortunately, the Japanese version of Fallout 4 stopped being updated at version 1.9.4, so I can't really mod the game. F4SE and my favourite mods will not work with such an outdated version.
I managed to change the voice to Japanese in the current, English version of the game, but could not for the life of me figure out how to change the text, or 'Strings'.

I tried the old trick of renaming 'ja' string files with 'en' then replacing the 'en' string files, but that doesn't work anymore, as the current version of the game no longer relies on the 'Strings' folder apparently.

I also tried changing the language to 'ja' in the '.ini' file, but it just changed the text to some weird jibberish, not Japanese.

Is there any way to change the text to Japanese in the current version of the game?
Is there any way to use current mods and the current version of F4SE with a 3 year old version of Fallout 4?

Thanks for any help!

The voices are ba2 files, I believe the text is changed via the ini files.
Most mods and modders are English so unless someone makes a patch then they will be stuck in English.

As for ver 1.94, you will find that most mods will not work. It is not capable of ESL's for example and the version register. So update the game via steam and just have subtitles is the only answer

Thanks for the reply,

I was able to change the voices to Japanese using ba2 files, no problem.

I need to find a way to change the in-game text of the English version.
I tried changing the language from 'en' to 'ja' in the default ini file but it just mixed seemingly random symbols into the games text. I then tried changing the language to 'fr' and the game switched to French, no problem. It seems like maybe the game files don't contain the Japanese characters... :\

Any suggestions?

You need to copy the Japanese subtitle file into the string folder.
I assume that windows is also running in Japanese as the game may pick up the font system from the computer

That method supposedly used to work, but not with the current build of Fallout 4.

Apparently the game no longer uses the 'Strings' folder and instead pulls the text from archives, whatever that means. I've already tried replacing the 'en' string files with Japanese ones renamed 'en' and it had no effect.

You did say that it was an older version anyway so later versions are irrelevant. If you search Nexus for strings, I think there is either an extraction mod or replacement that you can use

Nope, I'm using the latest version of Fallout 4.

I'm trying to change the language in the current, English version of Fallout 4 to Japanese. I have already succeeded at changing the voices, and am trying to find a solution to change the text.

The game has previously been fully, officially localised into Japanese, but is an old version. If I wanted to I could just play that, but would not be able to play with mods, and I obviously would like to play with mods.

This is a discussion with procedure that allowed me to have my game with English spoken and Italian subtitles and it still works today. Now i don't remember exactly but i think the problem was in a suffix of the .ba2 file in the .ini files. I had saved it because the solution was effective and almost impossible to find in the forums.
Where you find Italian (subtitles) you will have to replace Japanese.

"Fallout 4 english with Italian subtitles, voices disappear!!
I downloaded the .ba2 files in english
- saved them
- put the game back in Italian by replacing the italian .ba2 files with those in english
- renaming them voices_it.ba2
but in game voices disappear, I also tried to delete .ini files but nothing, it appears that steam does not recognize the renamed files. By reapplying "italian" files, voices of the characters return.

Nothing, I have been trying that method for two days, renamed "Fallout 4 - Voices.ba2" in "Fallout 4 - Voices_it.ba2" doesn't work in any way. I also tried to add without renaming by changing the "SResourceArchiveList = Fallout4 - Voices.ba2" but it not work.
It worked fine with FNV, I played in english with subtitles ita changing the famous group of strings and renaming it, but it doesn't work here. It works only in English or only in Italian..
I tried with all mods uninstalled, also deleting the .ini files, (incurring in the useless download of 2.14 GB..).
Also a message appears in Vortex: "Due to addities in the game engine, some loose file will not get loaded unless we change the file time on the vanilla BSA / Ba2 files. There is no drawback to doing this".

The procedure was right, the pref.ini files must be deleted in documents and in the game folder (called Fallout4), if you don't delete the speech it stops in game. In setting of .ini file, language must be the same as the subtitles, while the .ba2 files must be the original in english, renamed with the suffix of the new chosen language.
Check in [Archive] that voices.ba2 corresponds with the suffix of the subtitle language."
