Why can't I shoot an incoming missile down?

I read somewhere online the other day that this dude apparently had successfully shot down missiles without using VATS several times, whereas I can't even lock onto one single ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ missile coming my way once.

Today I tried fooling around with slo-mo (console command sgtm 0.1 and stuff), and attempted to shoot down the missiles a named super mutant, Hammer, was firing at me, but I could never pull that off. Am I alone here? Or was the guy I read about simply trolling?

He was probably trolling.In my 330 hours of gameplay,I never shot a missile down.

You can VATS target grenades but not rockets. Ever since fallout 3 you have never been able to shoot rockets mid-air.

i was actually running around in that area a couple of days ago and came across hammer and his boys when i accidently blew one of his missles up in his face - i was sitting pretty much as far away as the area allows (he had just come out of his house and i was sitting up by the car being fixed in the drive way opposite the raider BBQ)

hadn't actually realized blowing up missles was a thing till it happened and after that i think i managed to do 1 or 2 more before he ran out so it's diffinitely possible

don't know about VATS i know granades sometimes show up but not always so maybe VATS aren't entirely reliable when it comes to targeting moving explosives

maybe it's a glitch? or maybe the missle hitbox isn't where you'd expect it to be
i was pretty much on a stright line with them so if the hitbox is further back or ahead of the visual missle bullet would have hit anyway (hitbox could be mislinged either from lag or as a way to fix visual impact and explosion not syncing up)

isnt their a perk - for shooting explosives out of the air - in perception tree

for me it was an utter fluke - like i said i had no idea it was even a thing before it happened
maybe an easy way to test it would be to find a high level enemy with a rocket launcher and get a low damage minigun and just pelt them with bullets untill something blows up in their face
or maybe a shotgun and have a round of missle skeet shooting

Yeah it's possible, just blew up whats his face at Quincy,( up on the church). Was using that explosive hunting rifle, shot his mini nuke just as he shot it, blew him so far out of the area i still havn't found his body.

It can happen but it's extremely rare and random. Maybe even a glitch, but I've been able to vats target a missile once. I just don't make a habit of it because if you miss there's no time left to dodge the missile. That and my first reaction is to shoot the launcher out of thier hands so missiles aren't something I deal with often.

Thank goodness. The game would be 1000% more annoying if you were forced to play a bi-curious wiseass who complains constantly while breaking the 4th wall. Fallout isn't the setting for that.

In general ducking and running away is more viable then spray 5000 bullets and hope you'll hit something.
