Tato shortage?
So since i discovered the Vegetable Starch recipe ive made sure all my settlements have equal numbers of the required plants yet my workshop only seems to collect surplus corn and mutfruit.

Ive noticed this on 2 different characters...i thought it was coz the tato has a low yield but its the same as corn....have i missed something

It seems tatos are the preferred crop of choice to consume for settlers. Bored Peon has been waging wars over this for quite some time :D
Best bet is to up tato production everywhere to at least double the amount of the population so a surplus can be created

A PC only bug is that Tato plants will never be placed in the workshop and require manual harvesting.

^ Complete BS

I set up each settlement I have to only grow ONE type of crop, they either grow Tato, Corn, or Mutfruit.

Then I set up trade routes so they all go to Sanctuary

Usually when I make Vegetable Starch I have a few hundred of Tato, Corn and Mutfruit each, and since Vegetable Starch = 5 adhesives, I have an endless supply

I have experienced it myself, and the fallout wiki confirms it. Maybe it's not happening to you, but it seems to happen to enough people that it was added to the page.

Perhaps that is the food of choice for the settlers. However I prefer the one vegetable per settlement method. Besides I normally have to manually harvest my crops anyway so I don't see this as a big issue.

Yeah, I see this too. I started having each of my settlements dedicate 50% of their production to Tatos. This is with overall food production usually being 1.5x the population. I now see a steady flow of Tatos into my Workshop network for crafting. However, despite Tato's being my most cultivated crop by x2, it's still the one I run out of first when crafting Veg Starch.

So, as already said, settlers appear to have a bias toward consuming Tatos, so we need to over-produce to have spares for crafting.

On the other hand I wish we can grow Hubflower and Silt Beans. It frustrates me that we can't utilise certain recipes as much as others.........

There's a mod that lets you grow all of the chem plants

Well I usually run out of corn first when making Adhesive.

I'll plant ONLY Tatos on about 3 - 4 settlements, Only corn on others, and only Mutfruit on still yet others.

Only plant ONE crop at each settlement, don't waste your time planting Tatos, corn AND Mutfruit at each place, plant only ONE TYPE.
And plant a TON of them

I make sure my food production is much much higher than the number of settlers, if you've got 18 settlers and your food is 18, you're not going to get ANYTHING, you need to have the numbers be vastly different such as Settlers = 18, food = 63

Must admit, my mixed method over several settlements is yielding plenty of Veg Starch for my needs. I may well specialise as you suggest at future settlements though.

I have a severe Tato shortage as well. Tatos are a somewhat bugged item. I have some broken Tato plants that I can't repair despite having the Tatos to repair them with.

There's nothing bugged, just that settlers each Tatos before anything else. Trick is to plant tatos in your home settlement/base so that you can always pick them if needed.

At Abernathy Farm half of the Field is bugged, it's not the Tatos

i just plant next time whatever i'm short of... or rip out some mutas and plant tatos instead.
if the settlers want tatos, i plant more.

Need to disable and markfordelete the plants at Abernathy Farm if they bug out.

Yeah, what most dont realize is because tatos are the preffered crop your settlers will eat them before anythign else. This means they will also eat them grown at any settlement in the supply lines they are connected with.

Specializing crops at settlement is not really necessary.

You need to preplan your crops of tatos, such as 2 tato plants per setter in the settlement (and per settlement in your supply lines.) Then you need extra plants in order to gain excess in your workshop.

Crops are only grown during time played, not time waited/sleeping.

You are right and this is why a lot of people dont grow jack.

There is an actual formula buried in these forums to tell you how to produce excess food and how much you will get. Lee posted it months ago, I kinda half ass understood it at the time and I really didnt think it was that important at the time. It went something like if you produced 60% extra food you got 50% of that excess grown placed in your workshop. I am probbaly way off, but that was just to give you an idea of the formula.
