The companions there were shredded by everything at all stages in the game.
It's because they never took cover and always advanced or stood around in kill zones.
Add high damage enemies like Sentry bots and missiles and it became a game of saving your companions rather than your companions aiding you.
I like them not being able to die, it preserves story and makes it less of a hassle, they can still comment on things and add to your experience without becoming baggage. I like it. I always have since Fallout:NV
Considering how many enemies use explosives and high damage weapons, its a bad idea IMO
They will run right into situations that anyone with a half of a brain would avoid. This means you either have to baby sit them or command them to stay back.
Like stepping right before you exactly at the moment you're pulling the trigger of your explosive shotgun? They stand up afterwards... i don't ;)
When Fallout NV came, they changed it to be not perma death, unless playing hardcore mod. Which was a plus, BUT the AI was still bad.
NOW they actually try to find cover and shoot, even try to get enemy fire off of you. But they still kinda do stupid stuff from time to time, and I like not having them die, especially when I value my pack mule slaves.
Since they are now adding perma death to survival with your companions, I actually find that a good thing. It is "Survival" after all.
I kinda like em not dying cause it's like they work good, an they do help me out when I'm outnumbered. I want to use em, but they make lots of mistakes. You can't fully control them so their needs to be a balance.
I think one of the survival rework updates is changing this? They will run away from battle or die if they get hurt too much, I can't remember.
as I said make them protected ... yes if YOU kill them you are done for ... however in that case learn to aim.
