Mama Murphey Backstory?
I have never finished the main quest and I have not explored the areas south of Boston. I am giving up for a while until after the GECK and some more patches. In the meantime, I am curious if there is any more info in the game about Mama Murphy's past.

In Concord, one of the raiders has a key to a door inside the Corvega factory.

On the terminal for the leader of the Corvega raiders, Jared, is some info on Mama Murphy. Jared knows her from sometime before. He has been experimenting on people to try and give them the sight. It was reported to him that she was seen in Prestons group. It looks like Jared sent the raiders to attack the group because of Mama. I assume he wanted to capture her, but this is just a guess.

In Sanctuary, Mama tells Marcy that she has been on the run for a long time because she double crossed a raider. There is nothing to say that Jared is the one she double crossed.

Is there any more to the story to find? Or did they just leave it unfinshed?

Well, she was the one who warned the others in Quincy that trouble would be coming and that they should call for help from the Commonwealth Minutemen.

The survivors in Sanctuary are the last remaining elements of survivors of the Quincy massacre -- the Gunners came to town, most Minutemen didn't, and at least one Minuteman defected to the Gunners in disgust and helped them plan the attack. Other MM -- well, for instance, there's another group that started to demand payment from Bunker Hill and eventually became full-fledged raiders rather than starve.

If you go to Quincy, you can find some bits like terminals that had been used by Sturges or the Longs, and Mama Murphy's personal stash.

As far as backstory. No idea. Just struck me as another poorly written goofy character in a game filled with them. 'DA SIGHT!' isn't really important from a thematic perspective but she does gives you hints -- some of which yield dialogue option solutions -- for various parts of the main quest. Not that you'd need them.

When games lack good story telling, or good reason to provide the Protagonist with information, they add a "mystical" or "paranormal" information dump to it. Mama Murphy is that paranormal info dump.

Yes, but can it also be said that your character is also a "paranormal"?

Because a feral ghould shouldn't stop mid charge because you basically said "calm down you freak".

You got me there.. that basically comes down to Fallout being... Fallout. It's not hyper realistic in any sense. I don't particularly like that dumb perk.. but to each is their own.

Hoo boy this thread is painful to read.

Ok, so. If you believe Mama Murphy herself, she was either a mercenary or an adventurer in her youth (possibly both). Eventually for reasons unknown she settled down in Quincy (probably due to a combination of old age and the physical toll her drug addiction has taken on her). Her defining trait of course being the fact that on taking certain drugs (seemingly determined by instinct rather than any sort of divine vision, since she never makes a mention of her being *told* what to take) she is able to see glimpses of the past, present, and/or future.

As for anything specific like what you've mentioned, no not really. Much like the rest of the Quincy survivors there's not a whole lot floating around about them besides basic character setups and snapshots involving their lives in Quincy.

I hope you think New Vegas is a poorly written game too then, because it had someone who more or less had "the sight" in it too.

If you go into an area, you get "The Sight" from the past. OR you were a member! Dun Dun DUN!

If you're referring to Mr. House or Yes Man, there was at least some kind of reason beyond "magical sight". They used advanced calculations to determine the odds of winning a battle or a particular outcome. A load of crap? Possibly... but better than a paranormal Chem addict.

I'm referring to The Forecaster at the 188 Trading Post, who does exactly what Mama Murphy does but minus the chems and plus a ridiculous piece of headwear.
