Your favourite way to play Fallout 4 (minor spoilers)
Do you storm the main storyline, do a few side quests on the way, do loads of side quests or completely ignore the main storyline and make your own one?

Personally I felt I could not get any ending that I wanted on the main storyline and locked out all of them except the one (sorry boys but I ain't never been a fan of no militia) so I just completely ignore it and make my own one by exploring, building settlements and kicking whichever faction that gets in my way (I have a save at the end of the beginning vault so I can make up any background I want and avoid any responses that relate to the main quest).

Cheers,

There was a main storyline? When was that added?

I completed every side quest I could until I got bored and progressed the story a little, then went back to side quests. I pretty much went Paragon by always being the nice guy and helping the Minutemen. I helped the BOS until the mission involving Danse later on, couldn't be bothered with the Railroad as the missions they initially gave were repetitive and boring.

I only chose 4 settlements to build into bases and if I hadn't invested so much time into them I'd have done them differently and also done different locations. In fact it became rather pointless as I had completed most of the side quests by the time I got to the good locations.

Hoping some DLC changes that.

I normally do a few quests at first just to level up a little, then I normally forget about quests, especially the main story, and just go explore.

Rule 1) Don't fast travel unless absolutely forced to (i.e. stuck)
Rule 2) Never take off the vault suit unless forced to
Rule 3) Play on survival, never turn it off.

As slow as possible.

Almost 25 and I have not been past Ten Pines/Sunshine Tidings/Drumlin Diner. Preston and his band of droolies are still locked away in the museum.

This current game I have a goal of getting Sanctuary to 42 population before letting the 5 droolies out. Just to see if I get a 47 population or the game breaks :P

Also sticking wiht under the original size budgets for settlements and not using provisoners.

1. Exploration, 29 settlements, 1 companion, level 114.
2. Straight to Diamond City/Fort Hagen, no companion, level 24.
3. Mix of main and side quests, 3 settlements, level 92.
4. No Minutemen, no settlements, exploring, side quests for BOS, RR and Inst, level 89.
5. Everything: all companions, explore, side quests, explore, settlement, bit of main quest, explore, side quest, and so on.

I like to roleplay a specific character, so my playstyle and pace changes depending on which build I'm playing. I try making decisions and acting the way I speculate my character would under those circumstances and sometimes add some character development into the mix (eg: start off evil but turn out good after a chain of events).

For example, my first character in Fallout 4 was an Ubermensch version of myself. I decided to focus on the main quest, whilst at the same time not rushing it by creating intervals through a personal narrative. That's something I love about Bethesda games, they give you the freedom to fill in the blanks and make your own story (to a degree). I avoided settlement building for the most part and tried keeping things relatively cinematic. Took me ~120 hours to get to the institute, and I got an ending in under 200 hours. I've put in another 60 hours into my initial character and I'm still not done with him (currently roaming the glowing sea waiting for the dlc).

Playing without wearing pants is the best way to play, hands down.

I usually do a main quest, then move to side quests for a while, build, explore or whatever, then when I feel like progressing the storyline a bit more I'll do another main quest. I find doing it that way also helps in minimising quest glitches or failings.

On my first character I tried to pace myself but towards the latter stages of the main quest where you side with a faction I rushed it more than I would have liked. Hence a second playthrough. I'm in no hurry to find my son, I would rather explore the wasteland and find more things to do, do a bit or RPG, build up my settlements and be creative.

I play fallout4 similar to how I play real life. I balance work an play. I finish what I start working on. dont leave things hanging.
I force myself to get ♥♥♥♥ done in the story/quest lines before I go explore/murdering people with my my buddy cait.
