Because Bethesda has amazing writers and they definitely don't butcher lore... They made it cannon in the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ alien dlc, that the aliens caused the war.

Out of all the choices(america,china,aliens,Vault tec,non-superpower countries,ect.) I'd say Aliens or Vault -tec. Aliens due to their obsession with abducting differently "modified" humans. Vault-tec cause they have a history of bad choices and in addition had millitary contacts (Eg postwar Enclave)

My fallout 3 game crashed during this DLC so I didn't know this...

At the beginning it was only a fun joke... Like the bridge keeper, of godzilla's foot sted, café of broken dreams or the tardis...

But yeah... This, particulary, suck...

The Great War as in when the bombs dropped or the Great War as a hole? It was mostly due to resources being depleted, and America and China warred against eachother basically for their resources.
