Any downside to multiple romances?

So ive currently got Piper in love (no fade to black scene yet) but im also thinking about romancing Cait, I have 2 questions:

1) Is there an easy way to break up with Piper or do i just start romancing Cait and it sorts itself out?

2) Is there any downside to dumping/cheating on a romanced companion? I still would like to keep Piper as a friend.

Hmm, I've never had any of my companions complain about it.

But generally, after I romance them, I send them to the companion settlement and never speak to them again...

No there is no downside to romancing any and all NPC's

Leave piper at a settlement for a while and romance another. I picked her back up for fun and she had a unique dialog after we explored for a while.I left her at a settlement after she was romanced and played a bunch before going back to get her to get this to trigger.
