1. yes (green A gamepad button)
2. no (red B)
3. extra (blue X) - often takes a form of "pay me/ I want more for this", sarcastic yes (like "yes, but I laugh at you") and maybe (which means "no, but maybe later")
4. questions (yellow Y) - sometimes its only 1 relevant question, sometimes an entire submenu, it depends
5. exit (just walk away, many NPCs actually have reactions to this action)
This sort of choices only appears when you are faced with direct request coming from an NPC, so it doesnt sum up all conversations in the game
There are certain pros and cons to this system as I see it
+ its color coded for newcomers and conversation skippers (you'll be surprised how many players skip conversations and cutscenes, Bethesda actually added stuff you character says when you skip lines, and in many cases its NPC-specific, sometimes even something funny), somewhat safeguarding them from pressing wrong buttons, A/B are almost universally mean OK/cancel on xbox
- it can be confusing when there's a more complex choice involved, when all 4 choices have unique labels it can get hard to guess what's your character is about to say when you pick 1-word option
+ its very tempting to pick sarcastic option. many lines are great but w/o mods you dont see them. why its a plus? because it actually encourages you to try something, previously you would just read a line, laugh at it but wont pick it just so you can keep pretending you and that NPC love each other (for mutual gameplay benefits ofc).
I also think it was a way for bethesda to moderate itself. With voiced protagonist having 10 choices (with at least half of them inevitably leading to the same result) can be hard, especially if some things change during development. Even as it is this game still has a lot of lines, more than 2 previous bethesda games had together.
Many people want the NV dialogue:
"Do you take this quest?"
[Charisma 8] Be self-confident! Trust in yourself! You can do it on your own!
[Intelligence 7] Affirmative. I will humbly accept your request.
[Repair 30] Yeah, I'll fix your problem.
Yes.
No.
Lol, the protatonist is no Commander Sheppard.
"I'm here to pick up an order. (...) Name is ♥♥♥♥ you."
"Protatonist"
Is this like some upmarket version of a Tattoo Artist
Wow, I have tried so long to describe why I don't like NV. I guess "overexposed gameplay mechanic" is what I looked for.
