Occasionally they do participate in relatively safe field training exercises, as part of their education. One would think the scribes would accompany a squad in order to guarantee their safety, and yet comically, a child is sent out with only one member of the brotherhood (and one companion, if present) to an incredibly dangerous locations to clear out a location of feral ghouls, super mutants or synths. Still, over all I liked the quest (Leading by example) and the interaction with the scribe.
You clearly don't know your history.
Boys were often trained into war from as early as 10-12 in ancient days. It was normal right until the 18th century where boys went on the battlefield playing the drums supporting the men or on Ships of the Line as cannons fired into eachother, just 200 years ago!
Now take into context a world where Mankind is on the brink of extinction you bet they will train kids almost as soon as he could walk to do the things of men. This is how strong men were made in times of difficulty.
And exactly the same will happen today if we ever fall into a cataclysmic end of the world scenario. Get as mad as you want- that's how it always is. Be thankful that in this case, it's just a game.
That Fallout4 Writer knows HIS history and it adds a great extra element to the game.
Cool made-up story, Bro.
They don't die.

With friendly fire they get killed by their own very often.
Some conflicts have child soldiers now, and in real life.
My issue with the BOS is that they are a satire/commentary on the Military Industrial Complex, where they look for new causes for war to keep the profits going. More akin to pirates, really. Even in real life history where the soldiers were allowed to pillage as part of their pay, you didn't have to buy your own armor, uniforms (okay, officers do) weapons and bullets.
Sounds like someone thinks I don't know about the killable children mod.
I choose not to use it. And you should have mentioned you used killable children instead of acting like it's part of the default game.
The Prydwen has a rigid frame supporting its envelope, rather than just relying on internal pressure like a blimp.
