The Automatron name bug is still a thing, already finished dangerous minds (Fixed 2020)
I finished most of the main quest and decided it would be helpful to have a robot, so I got the Workbench and started creating one.

However, it defaulted to Automatron, and you can't rename it. I searched for about a day and a half trying to figure before remembering I tried making a robot before, but it did the same thing. I don't know if it was between Reunions and Dangerous Minds, but there's a good chance.

However, I completed both quests over a month ago. I created the first robot over a month ago. And my new robot was made yesterday.

I looked all over the internet, and everyone said that it fixes after Dangerous Minds, but it is well past that point.

Does anyone know of a possible fix?

I made some progress. The mod "Rename Anything" by registrator2000 can reset the overwrite and rename him. But it only lasts for a few seconds, then the name resets to Automatron.

EDIT: the mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/22105?tab=description

Good news, I fixed it.

This solution may not work for everyone, but so far, it has worked for about two hours of playtime; plus I've gone into the workbench and changed the name a few times to see.

1. Download the Rename Everything mod I sent before.
2. Click on your automatron and type: "setname" in the console three times. It informs you that it did not change the name, but it just resets the override; you can rename the automatron.
3. Click on your automatron again and type:" set name "(name of your choice without the parentheses)" " in the console three times and see if it works.

If it doesn't, just repeat steps two and three twice in a row. It may not even work for you, or you can try a combination for yourself on the mod page.

The reason for doing it two or three times makes sense but also doesn't at the same time to me, but it was the only thing that worked.

I hope this helps!

I have never seen it do Automatron as a default name. I have seen it do Automatron# as a default name and then I just use the robot bench to rename them.

I will have to try this later. I "recruited" the Mr Handy that was in the souvenir shop near Ticonderoga as a settler with the Amazing Follower Tweaks mod. It still sells the stuff. But the rename anything keeps reverting back to "Mr Handy". This is the first time rename failed for me.

To be honest that is kinda of a self inflicted problem.

I think NPCs like that need special editing to be able to use the robot workbench on them. The original 6 Greygarden for example.

Have you ever been able to use that to rename a bot not made by the robot workbench?

Correct, self inflicted. I am not complaining. Just throwing stuff out for discussion. I never tried to use the robot workbench on it. I do not have Automatron started. I am happy to just let it hover/wander around doing nothing. I cannot assign it any job anyway. I am not sure I am able to rename any robot I recruit this way. I think this is the first one I tried to rename. I did recruit the sentry robot at the junkyard near Sanctuary to Red Rocket. I was able to assign that one to a guard post.

Yeah those Vault guard plates are awesome for that. I assigned a sentry bot to the tree of them and made it so it could patrol the settlement.

The military guard posts are just generally better than the regular ones unless you need to fill a bigger gap.

Though I guess the regular ones can also have flooring snap to them (but strangely not the reverse, which would be more useful).

NEW FIX FOUND:

If it cannot be fixed for you by completing Reunions/Dangerous Minds etc... then I found another solution that should help.

It has to do with you having "Neon Flats" installed. This is Creation Club content. This content comes with a quest and a new apartment. You must complete that corresponding quest called "Neon Winter".

Once you have completed "Neon Winter", every robot you craft from there on, should not have that name reset/disappearing issue anymore. It definitely worked for me after testing it intensively.

Hope it works for you too... Please let me know if it helped :)

Yes! This was two years ago, but I did experience this again with the "Rename Anything" mod not working in my last playthrough. The Neon Flats quest finishing worked perfectly but I forgot I made this post, thank you for the fix! This was most definitely the problem the first time.
