The help screen is correct and what you posted is indeed how hacking works.
As an example. Say the password is Thin.
I guess Shop. I get a likeness of 1 for the H, but the word is wrong.
Then I guess Chat. I still only get a likeness of 1 because none of the other letters were correct except for the H.
Then I guess Thin and it get it correct.
-Situation
-Mutation
-Damnation
or
-Ball
-Doll
-Mole
I go by this logic and it works usually when I'm hacking. I didn't get into specifics nor do I follow tutorials in games, unless really needed. If the word tells me the likeness is 2 or 3, then I find another word that has a similar tone to it.
Could also be based on letters, the number of letters and position of letters, I don't know really.
-Runs
-Hits
-Jive
-Dive
-Sins
-Band
-Hard
-Hand
-Hind
You guess "Hits" - 1 likeness (Meaning one of the letters in "Hits" matches one of the letters in the correct password and that correct letter is positioned in the same spot in "Hits" as it is in the correct password.
So if the "H" was the one correct letter then "Hard", "Hand" and "Hind" would be the correct password.
If the "i" is the correct letter then either "Jive", "Dive" and "Sins" could be the correct password.
If the "t" is the correct letter then none of the remaining choices could be the correct password, which effectively eliminates the "t" being the correct letter.
If the "s" is the correct letter then "Runs" and "Sins" could be the correct password.
However, you would no longer guess "Sins" or "Hind" because both those words match MORE than 1 letter to your previous guess of "Hits" ("Sins" matches the letter "i" and the letter "s" in "Hits" and "Hind" matches the letters "H" and "i" in "Hits" - In order for either of those to have been viable options for the correct password your input of "Hits" would have had to yield a "2 likeness", but it didn't... So let's continue)
Now you guess "Dive" - 0 likeness
You would no longer guess "Hive" because it matches 3 letters. you can now effectively deduce that the 1 letter it DID match from your previous input (The letter "i") will not be the matching letter for the correct password
Now you guess "Hand" - 3 likeness
This indicated the "H" from your first input was the correct letter. Of the remaining answers you would then look at any word that starts with "H" and has 2 other common letters to the word "Hand"
You then gain access to the terminal after guessing "Hard" because the "H", "a" and "d" match.
TIPS FOR HACKING TERMINALS - If you see any of these symbols "< [ (" you should then following each character to the right of it on the same row and see if the corrisponding symbol that will enclose the bracket, perenthesis, or less than symbol is present
EXAMPLE
"</[;(>" or "(/][\/)" or "[/>><\\]" = highlighting the "<" or "(" or "[" in the corresponding examples will highlight the enclosed function and clicking on it will either award you by removing an incorrect password choice or replenish your password attempts without taking up any of your remaining chances to "guess" the remaining password.
Enclosed functions can only work if they're within the same row. They will not enclose within multiple rowes and can NOT enclose if a possible password choice is within them (example - "<//[;REST\\>" would not work. However, if you manage to locate a working enclosed funtion and it eliminates the word "Rest" from your selection the function will now read "<//[;....\\>" and will NOW work.)
AHHHH!!! Thats what it SHOULD be but following that same logic I have run into situations where NO answer would fit.
So following your example; Hits gives me 1 likeness so therefor H should be the first Letter, Tried Hand Hind and Hard only to wind up locked out when no other of the list have an H or any other close matches, all still giving me 1 likeness till it locks me out.
Can some one show a video providing proof of how likeness works? Does this game sometimes give Hack mini games with no right answer??
