Junkyard Dogs

So, this may not be groundbreaking news, but I just discovered you can reverse-pickpocket dog armor onto Junkyard dogs. I've got a collection of them at Red Rocket so Dogmeat has some company and they're actually pretty effective for settlement defense, between the two of them and DM himself they tear through raiders pretty quickly and immobilize them while the turrets blast them. They also boost happiness and provide +5 defense stat.

Just drop the armor onto them with reverse pickpocet and do a zone transition, and they'll be wearing it.

The junkyards dogs can be killed off. They do not have the essential flag like settlers and some NPCs.

That will set the parent to be essential and automaticlaly transfer all essential flags to your spawned copies (ie purchased dogs.)

He shows up around Zijmona and Abernathy for me a lot.

I make a stop at Abernathy every time I fast travel somewhere. lol I'll try Zijmona and Sunshine more often though, thanks.

Sad story, I ran into him at Sunshine after getting the defend settlement message, convinced him to sell me a dog before he buggered off only to see said dog get gunned down in front of him by Super Mutants. Heard him screaming Nooooooo!!!

Brutal.

I have the most luck finding him running between Zij and Sunshine and stopping at all the settlements on the way, which I do anyway for crop gathering because I'm on a no fast travel play through waiting for the survival update. Found him 3 times so far, helps to follow the roads even though it's a bit further.

Gene and his dog can also spawn at Starlight Drive-Inn near the bridge - so maybe check that place too.

I have three of them now, but my pickpocket skill sucks, so if I try to outfit them, they get mad at me and try to kill me. :(

I used to see him alot in collage square, but lately I haven't seen him.

I guess everything is better on the junkyard dogs as the dog items have no relevant stats but weight so all they do is make Dogmeat more likely to be detected when sneaking.

AFAIK they do add armor in Vanilla now, if not there are mods for that.
