Also, you will have to build up the house anyways, it's a waste. if you REALLY want a house, and a new companion, for free go to vault 81. You'll get 2 quests from them.
Also, sell stuff you don't use, or don't use a whole lot, like chems, ammo, weapons, armor, junk, misc items, and foods/meats.
If you are working on settlements, set up shops, they give you income based on the shop level (I think), and sell the foods/water also.

Diamond City - Talk to Mayor's secretary.
Talk to the mayor's secretary in Diamond City.
So I guess we can't buy houses plural, there is just one house to be purchased in Diamond City.
Also a good source of income is to sell the food you cook and if your not a drug user sell all those as well.
At your level I wouldn't bother with buying Home Plate, I would take over Hangman's Alley which is a short walk from Diamond City and place one of the pre-built houses and send a settler there to farm food for you.
Home Plate is great for displaying your stuff, but since it cannot have a supply line its not that great for much else.
Hope that helps.
Gathering, crafting, and selling chems also helps.
