How do I earn money?
I'm at level 23 and my purse seems to be stuck at around 2000 caps. I want to buy a house but that would leave me dead broke. I feel I should have more money by this point. Any money-making tips?

why would you BUY a house when you can Make one to your liking in any settlement?

Need to find the vendors and sell your unwanted stuff to them. Selling excessive ammo types you are not using is an easy way to make caps. I have a level 12 character with over 5k caps not sure why you are so low. If you have more stuff to sell than the person has caps buy their stimpaks or other items you might want and play with the buy/sell until they have no caps then accept the trade. I have never had a problem with caps in any fallout game. It is harder to do this at the beginning of the game but still viable all the same.

maybe he doesn't want to make a home?

Also, you will have to build up the house anyways, it's a waste. if you REALLY want a house, and a new companion, for free go to vault 81. You'll get 2 quests from them.

Also, sell stuff you don't use, or don't use a whole lot, like chems, ammo, weapons, armor, junk, misc items, and foods/meats.

If you are working on settlements, set up shops, they give you income based on the shop level (I think), and sell the foods/water also.

In addition to what LewisLemitar2 said, the size of the shop does affect how many caps they have to buy stuff with. But if you choose the "invest" option with any shop, that'll permanently increase (by 500 caps) the amount of caps any shop of that type has to buy stuff with.

Well, I guess it's because I tend to be pretty overloaded with different kinds of guns for different situations, which doesn't allow me to carry all that much loot.

There is one in diamond city's r 2000 caps, and each faction has their own house. Castle for Minutemen, institute for institute, RR has safe houses and BoS is the prydwen

Thanks also Asar si Mar.

So I guess we can't buy houses plural, there is just one house to be purchased in Diamond City.

I play without Stimpacks and sell 4 per unit for ~ 100 Caps. Also Jet, Buffout, Psycho a.s.o. .

I make money selling weapons, clothing and legendaries I don't want. I have a system where I scrap anything under 100 caps in value and later in the game under 150 caps. I also scrap all the armor I find as this covers me for Steel and Leather.

Also a good source of income is to sell the food you cook and if your not a drug user sell all those as well.

At your level I wouldn't bother with buying Home Plate, I would take over Hangman's Alley which is a short walk from Diamond City and place one of the pre-built houses and send a settler there to farm food for you.

Home Plate is great for displaying your stuff, but since it cannot have a supply line its not that great for much else.

Hope that helps.

I earned around 50k caps by doing missions for the Railroad. Not only do they award you with more caps then the other factions, they also give you equipment which you can sell for even more caps.
Gathering, crafting, and selling chems also helps.
