Why does "Father" have a British accent?...
... after growing up underground surrounded by Americans? That's what I'd like to know. Did he watch re-runs of "To The Manor Born" or old documentaries of the Royal family or something? .

Is it because Americans think anyone with a British accent sounds intelligent (obviously we are. lol)

Random thought for the day.

where is mum? this game is gender discriminating!

To me the accent sounds very slight, as though a south american/european "mastered" the language -despite it not being his mother tongue.

Yeah, I think future DLC should include Father marrying and then you're having to deal with a Daughter-In-Law from hell who is older than Mama Murphy. That could be fun.

I think I'm going to phone the actor who played him and asked what his intention was with that accent, just to solve the argument. Anyone have his number?

I'm British, English to be precise, middle-class, from 'middle England', and I don't think Father sounds exactly British.

If anything, he sounds like a flat, educated American accent with a slight tinge of British. Most very well educated Americans tend to have a non-stereotypical American accent - and you have to remember that the Institute are made up of some of the greatest minds the world has ever seen...and he will have been brought up in isolation within their circle.

Also, as a child, he has a much clearer American accent.

In short: He's not British, he's more well educated American with some assimilation from the accents of the upper eschelons of the world's greatest minds. It makes sense.

On the subject of why Cait can still have an Irish accent - well, Boston has a HUGE Irish population, in fact around 15% of the population are of Irish descent. It's perfectly believable that she is from a family who have preserved their accent through the years - perhaps through listening to Holotapes etc. etc.

He may not be pulling off his British accent but he`s definately trying. I read somewhere that the Americans in Hollywood believe the English accent is a little sinister and often use a British actor in there films for the Evil side of things, so it may make sense.

Alright, I just did some research because I've heard other Americans speak like Father in other movies and apparently It's called a Transatlantic accent, if it's not then it's just some kind of elite class american accent.

What about Cait? It's not like she moved from Ireland.

Yeah, that's why I asked about the Bobrov Brothers and their russian accent. It doesn't make any sense. These people were born in the Commonewealth, so why do they have these foreign accents?

More impoprtantly, why don't more people have that distinctive Boston/Massachussets type Charles Winchester III accent?

Yeah, he sounds like a posh American, no doubt.

Well... to conclude, whether he's meant to be upper class American with an affected British accent... or British with a slight American pronunciation on particular words - he's definitely got that British twang... and I have heard people talk like that in the UK. :)

Can't we just agree that despite a nuclear war having happened.
There at the time either were tourists and/or people living in Boston, who were either not American people or then Americans with accents from other countries, which have been carried over from family to family through the years?
Does it really matter what Shaun does or does not sound like? He is a pretty cool guy with humanities best interest in mind and heart, even if his methods are a little... Twisted.

So you've gone from telling people they're wrong when they say he's definitely not British (he isn't) to admitting you were wrong without actually using the words?

Right...your credibility has taken a huge hit here.

That's the sad thing about the whole main story.
Anyway.. I like Father's voice.. it sounds like the kind of voice you'd want your father to have.. calm and reassuring.

Lolll..
I'm not here to gain credibility luv.

And where did I say I was wrong? Like you say, I DIDN'T say it. I said I've heard people speak like Father in my own home country. So what's your point? Just want to start a pointless argument? I'm discussing the British quality of his voice. My original post was - as I said - a "random thought".. aren't we allowed random thoughts here? I've seen more useless threads than this.

For chrissakes lighten up.

He's American, he was born in America, to American parents. So he's not really "meant" to be anything but that. Can't say I've ever heard anyone speak like him in the UK, that claimed to be English, either...
