Okay. Lets assume this is true. What would explain the continued presence there? One thing I could potentially see is that all the trappers out there are Harbormen/women that sometime within recent times got lost in the fog. The problem with this is that there is a lot of trappers out there. The trappers seem to greatly outnumber the folks in Far Harbor. However it could also be that the actual canon size and population of Far Harbor is not as small as we see in game.
Besides the Children of Atom, the residents are alarmed by it and even go so far as to accuse the Children of being responsible for it. They fear the fog not only for the danger it brings (ergo the local wildlife) but also for whatever is responsible in the fog that drives people to madness. Which is why the inhabitants are so dependent upon fog condensers that keep them save from the properties of the fog and the wildlife that follows.
Have you not noticed the lack of older people on the islands? Other than Longfellow who is tough as nails, the life expectancy of people is significantly shorter than on the mainland. According to Longfellow, the fog is not a constant phenomena on the islands. He remembers a time like now happening in the past when the fog was so spread out and thick. He also knows it will recede on its own in time.
Ware is not even a true believer of Atom and is still willing to serve them, than risk becoming a trapper again. That should speak volumes regarding trapper lifestyle and their relationships. Of course, Malcolm from the quest Turn back the fog is most definitely a trapper and is the only one in my recollection that is able to hold a conversation. Which suggests to me that whatever properties inflict the madness, is in its early stages. Even in its early stages, Malcom has developed a taste for human flesh. When they are far gone, trappers are more beast than men. Or better yet, rabid animals. Even Supermutants show more affection towards each other, than Trappers do.
With that as the stated concern, it sounds like they'd definitely be competing for food, but not to the point of killing other trappers to cannibalize them.
So it is most likely residents of far harbor or the children of atom getting lost in the fog? It would kinda make sense I suppose.
Sounds like a miserable existance.
