Jokes aside, doubt it's the antivirus. People always bring that up, but it's never the issue. If you do want to check your antivirus, you can see if Fallout4.exe is excluded. Some antivirus software are very hard on the system and such. But honestly if the game crashes due to antivirus you should find something in the logs for that. You can exclude the folder for on access scan. I personally don't use 3rd party antivirus and just run the Windows version.
What you can try is loading an older save and go through the motions to the end of the game again. Sometimes a script is messing up your save even before you take the action that crashes your game. So it will always crash if you load that save. Best to have a save from a different "cell" so an interior cell or a spot somewhere else on the map. This may be your "easiest" fix.
Problem solved. Another gold star for Xenon the gas. Hey, how bout my brother Radon? He's glows.
This is a very common issue.
You could also find which faction you're doing this FOR, on the fandom wiki, since the quest ID would vary a bit, and figure out a way to force it with a console command but it's best to not do that.
I ended up going way back in my saves and trying again but it still keeps freezing when I get to the cut scene (I tried the BOS this time lmao). Any other ideas?
That's a pain but thanks I'll have to look into doing that. Still getting the freeze even when loading an old save and trying a new faction so far :(
I tried going back to quite an old save file much older to try again so I don't think my file is necessarily my issue
So, give your system a lookover, and see if there's anything that auto-updates without permission, or grabs the focus to ask for permission to update, and turn off the auto-updates. Also, make sure you're not running a bunch of stuff in the background that could eat a lot of memory. If the system goes to reclaim memory (noted by the game losing focus and going to the desktop for apparently no reason, but the game is still running), and you're running a lot of stuff in the background, you might get a crash then. This is a low-probability thing, though, the updates grabbing focus is much more likely to cause a crash.
