Fo4: Game crash every time I try to blow up the institute with the railroad
Hey guys, needing some serious help. Every time I try to blow up the institute with the railroad my screen fades to play the cut scene but just gets stuck and refuses to load at all. I haven't had any problems with freezing etc before so uncertain why this is happening. I tried updating all my drivers and software + deleting old save files to see if that would help but nothing so far.
I saw that anti-virus can interact so is there a potential my McAfee's could interfere? Steam isn't on apps that it has blocked so I don't think that is it but I could be wrong. Any help would be appreciated :)

(My PC is in-between max and min specs needed to play so it shouldn't be any issues with this - I5 core & I've tried windows 10 & 11).

Ps. this is my first time playing and thus my first ending so unsure if it has happened (/would happen) with any of the other endings.

It's the game telling you you selected the worse faction to end the game with.

Jokes aside, doubt it's the antivirus. People always bring that up, but it's never the issue. If you do want to check your antivirus, you can see if Fallout4.exe is excluded. Some antivirus software are very hard on the system and such. But honestly if the game crashes due to antivirus you should find something in the logs for that. You can exclude the folder for on access scan. I personally don't use 3rd party antivirus and just run the Windows version.

What you can try is loading an older save and go through the motions to the end of the game again. Sometimes a script is messing up your save even before you take the action that crashes your game. So it will always crash if you load that save. Best to have a save from a different "cell" so an interior cell or a spot somewhere else on the map. This may be your "easiest" fix.

Don't blow up the Institute.

Find a prior manual save and load it.

This is a very common issue.

You could also find which faction you're doing this FOR, on the fandom wiki, since the quest ID would vary a bit, and figure out a way to force it with a console command but it's best to not do that.

I ended up going way back in my saves and trying again but it still keeps freezing when I get to the cut scene (I tried the BOS this time lmao). Any other ideas?

That's a pain but thanks I'll have to look into doing that. Still getting the freeze even when loading an old save and trying a new faction so far :(

I would uninstall McAfee and simply use Microsoft Defender, even if I didn't have any crashes. McAfee is monstrous bloatware that uses a lot of clock cycles. Sounds to me like a classic case of having a bad save.

I tried going back to quite an old save file much older to try again so I don't think my file is necessarily my issue

Generally, AV programs don't do that anymore, unless it's updating at the time you're playing, and most have options to turn off updates while you're playing. That doesn't mean other programs can't crash your game with updates, though. Adobe Acrobat Reader updates whenever the hell it wants to (and crashed some of my games), and Adobe refuses to give it a task scheduling update (their response to my support ticket), so I uninstalled it.

So, give your system a lookover, and see if there's anything that auto-updates without permission, or grabs the focus to ask for permission to update, and turn off the auto-updates. Also, make sure you're not running a bunch of stuff in the background that could eat a lot of memory. If the system goes to reclaim memory (noted by the game losing focus and going to the desktop for apparently no reason, but the game is still running), and you're running a lot of stuff in the background, you might get a crash then. This is a low-probability thing, though, the updates grabbing focus is much more likely to cause a crash.

The problem is you have a low-quality rig. Try saving some money,{if you can} and buy a REAL rig. That way, you won't have this issue anymore. Problem solved.
