Book Return Tokens
I like to go around the commonwealth, picking flowers, picking up cans, and returning overdue books.
I finally have enough book return tokens to get the Massachusetts Surgeon journal I've wanted since I first visited the Boston Library.

Police Stations have book return machines. Are there other good things at other places? mostly it's scrap that's not worth the time.

IRL, if you return a book late you pay a fine, 10cents a day. Seems the fine should be $7665. Instead you get redeemable book tokens. Does that sound like it's sending the youth of the commonwealth the wrong message? I think it would be better to send a death claw on book retrieval. Giving them toys for returning books late is just wrong.

No, aside from the Massachusetts Surgeon Journal, the only items of any value are those that give you temporary stat boosts or the occasional fusion core and grenades. Unless you're into decorating your settlements with undamaged junk items.

Most likely scenario, before the War (as always, keep in mind that things do not need to make sense in a post-apocalyptic scenario because that's not what they were designed for in the game lore) fewer and fewer kids where spending time reading books (just as it happens today IRL) and the government / local institutions / well meaning patrons etc etc devised a way for them to get baubles and toys as an incentives to spend their time reading.

In that scenario it's reasonable to assume that there would be no fine for late return of a book but the token would only be granted after a reasonable amount of time had passed since the check-out, to avoid kids "gaming" the system.

fusion cores are good enough to keep looking in schools for lost books.

If you buy fusion cores from vendors every time you see them and loot all ammo boxes and fusion generators you come across, you will never run out of fusion cores even if you spend 100% of your time in power armor with 0 ranks of nuclear physicist
I’ve done it 3 playthroughs in a row that way now, we’ll see if it changes once I start using a Gatling laser but I kind of doubt it as I’m sitting on a stockpile of 40+ cores already

True enough. Sometimes I put fusion cores in a container and then go on walk-about in power armor and come back with more cores than SS started with.

Only valuable item is that book. And there was 9 books in and around the library. you just needed one extra. there must have been one at basement of that church nearby.

No need to carry around those books all along the game, just finish it on the spot.

My memory is the Boston library is the big place.

This worked before.. get one more book at the Church, but the game I'm playing down it didn't. I kicked it up to "Very Hard" tho, and I've noticed more molerats and bugs and fewer books. Had to check out the schools.
