How do the profiles in Vortex work?

I wanna install some mods and I haven't messed with them in ages so I don't wanna screw something up

I created two profiles, one for vanilla gameplay for my main, current playthrough and one for modded once I start a new game. I installed the mods, but when I launch the game, the load option in the main menu is greyed out. How do the profiles work then? I wanna have two different ones for vanilla and modded, but I'm a bit confused at this point

Is there a way at all to launch the vanilla game from Steam once I use Vortex anyway?

1) Make first profile for base game.
2) Make new profile for mods. I usually do this from cloning.
3) Enable new profile
4) Install mods.

if none of your mods required the fallout 4 script extender (FO4SE), you can start from Steam. Otherwise you need to start Steam first and then start from the FO4SE

I know its not helping but subjecively speaking i get more than iam asking for with MO2. Profiles are simple as heck to manage.
Tried Vortex, went back.
