The Lost Patrol. Spoilers.
So after getting utterly mauled by Radscorpions I'd held off this mission for a long time - until I found out that at close range my souped up shotgun would one shot them.

So when I finally get there of course there's no Radscorpions. There's three parts to the quest and one involved a giant super mutant that it took, inter alia, three shots from a rocket launcher to put down. So I finally trek up to the bunker and the guy starts blasting me. So I reload and go in without a gun and he still starts blasting me. So I reload again and this time the guy gets shot. I loot the corpse and the bunker and report back that everyone is dead and get my reward.

Some people you just can't help. Fortunately I'm pretty sure that none of the holotapes that I handed over showed me killing him.

S.x.

P.S.. I've got to the stage where wherever I've been travelling there's a Brotherhood of Steel helicopter overhead shooting up the bad guys. Sometimes they'll even drop friendly (to me) troops on the ground.

Cool. Easy looting.

Paladin Brandis may have gotten a little mad from losing his entire team and failing his mission, and then lost his marbles even more from being alone for so long while also being accosted by raiders and other hostiles. Shouldn't come as a surprise that Brandis starts shooting at you at first sight. However you can convince him to return to the Brotherhood or you can decide to let him stay there alone from which point he'll be friendly to you or you can just kill him and loot his black officer uniform.

https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/The_Lost_Patrol gives a couple of reasons why Brandis turns unexpectedly hostile. One is supposed to happen, the other a bug.

Supposed to happen:
If Danse is the current companion, and Blind Betrayal is completed, Brandis will become hostile after completing this quest.

Bug:
While in any power armor and using the targeting HUD mod on the helmet, opening the door to the bunker may cause Brandis to be hostile.

Neutral chars. turns hostile when targeted, not a bug, works as intended, update Player.
Although I was wearing my Silver Shroud armour when I met him and specifically on the reloads went in not carrying a weapon. Perhaps he doesn't like synths ... ?

Also I wonder if that was a case where I disarmed AFTER he started shooting at me that might have calmed him ?

I've only had Brandis turn hostile when I stepped in too close before completing his initial dialogue, but I don't know offhand if that's from getting too close to him or stepping too far into the bunker (and shouldn't be an issue if you're trying to be careful in your approach).

The Silver Shroud gear shouldn't mess with that dialogue as far as I know (and it seems unlikely it would make any difference), but then I've never tried going in there wearing it.
Brandis dead. He shot at me repeatedly. Sorry.

He shot at you because you didn't stop, like he asked.
Considering what happened next that might have been his mistake.
