Pipes are all wrong
The concept of pipe gun as used in Fallout 4 is all wrong. You have all types of weapons made from pipes, automatics, sniper rifles, pistols, revolvers etc. Highly moddable, cheap, and frequently better than their technical counterparts. Widely used by raiders, mutants and settlers.
But a 'pipe' gun should be a weapon made from pipes, very crude that fires one bullet or one shotgun shell. Fallout 2 had it right.
The worst is that you find them everywhere in pre-war containers. Why would anyone pre-war keep a piece of trash pipe gun in their safe?
I wonder if there is any mod that phases out pipe guns or makes them more believable. One that really works and is recommended tho, I've found a couple but they are buggy.

I always wonder why that lunchbox next to the 200 year dead skeletal remains in a long-sealed underground bunker facility has *radroach meat* or *a single mutfruit*. ... damn son your sandwich got out of control?

But yeah it's yet another reason suspending your disbelief sometimes has to be very, very strained and on the thinnest of strands....

@Zekiran Yeah finding mutated stuff inside sealed containers is weird but let alone finding a blood bag in a hospital still with blood out of the fridge for 200 years... Real life it probably doesn't last 20 minutes.
I've scoured the nexus and found various mods, non satisfactory with too many bugs or incompatibilities reported. Yeah it was only a thought. *Sigh* I'll pick my silly pipe SMG and set out...

Yeah cause fighting enemies who can fire 1 shot at a time would be interesting :B

you know making both semi automatic and fully automatic improvised guns is a real thing right? single shot brake action zip guns well the most common are hardly the only kind of pipe gun thats been made in real life

I don't know, maybe after 200 years of constant terrible warfare, semi-automatic high capacity home-made guns were desperately in demand, it would be reasonable if in those 200 years there was a design of said home-made gun, that was cheap and easily made.

Considering most wasteland creatures are enormous, a single shot pipe weapon couldn't reliably take out a rad-roach, let alone a raider.

There's also this mod that retextures pipe guns very nicely, pretty big size though. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/54933?tab=description

Yes pipe weapons are all wrong, because without rifling in the barrel you wouldn't hit what you are aiming at past about 3 meters. Just try and hit something 10 meters away with a smooth bore pipe. The bullet will be tumbling end over end as soon as it leaves the barrel. Also, that is if it doesn't blowup and take your hand off.

Yeah pipes suck at least those in the game. I'm not suggesting actually using one-shot pipe guns in FO4 (well it might be interesting in a survival challenge), just pointing out that the idea was right in Fallout 2. There the one-shot pipe rifle was the first firearm you got and had to use it until you could get your hands on a 10mm pistol. And it actually looked like made of a pipe.
I didn't know about improvised guns being fabricated, good to know. However those imply a know how and actually manufacturing a technical weapon, only difference it being home made. Where I live, gang members make real pipe guns. They take common pipes, improvise a percutor and place a shotgun shell or a bullet in the pipe. One-time use. They sometimes even weld a couple of other pipes to make it look like the stock and the magazine of a submachinegun (with no real function) :-)
Anyway, I perused a half-dozen mods and none has really undertaken to replace the game's pipe guns (all three types) with something believable. Or at least less ugly. The closest I found was a mod substituting a "defense gun" for the pipe rifle/pistol, but still leaving the bolt-action and revolver in the game.

Yes...and vertibirds behave like dragons from Skyrim. The loot system from a living world was copy-pasted to a world once alive, then mostly dead, then both. Pipe weapons, enchanted weapons, no DT system, changing receivers increasing damage or adding armor piercing as opposed to changing the ammo TYPE, perks (biological) that also somehow increase firearm/explosives damage (chemisty/physics), and other assorted Tamriel-like magic on Earth. Etc, etc, etc...

*sigh* We were Elves once...

vanilla pipe guns are 1000% ass sweat. the auto pipe gun can make a serviceable .38 bullet hose, and thats about it. they are also ugly as sin.
i like Nina's retexture mod for my pipes, plus an overhaul for the weapons system that includes ammo switching and crafting. Theres also weapon mods that can completely replace pipe guns like the Tomacuzi mod.

I use a dark retexture for the pipes which makes them look a bit less ugly. My concept is that pipes should be more crude and way less effective. There should be a notorious difference between using a pipe and using a pre-war weapon, such that pipes should really be only a stop-gap until you get something better. They should have a terrible spread for starters. It is ridiculous that the bulk of the legendaries you find, are pipes...
