I don't do VATS
but just realized that at higher levels, that's the only way to up the damage you can do.
The game is your damage rate and damage resistance vs the mob's damage rate and damage resistance.
Awhile back I was having a shootout with a supermutant. We were just kinda standing there, shooting each other as fast as we could. And I reflected on how stupid this was.
The answer was VATs, the comic books like Guns and Ammo, Tesla, etc and the perks under luck and agility. If you don't use VATS, comic books and those perks are useless. But at high levels, it's the only way to improve your characters rate at which they can inflict damage.
But... I hate VATs the aim is poor, the special effects are annoying, the play is not immersive and it's not intuitive. A supermutant suicider is charging at you. You go to vats! Vats picks out a land mine and not the suicider, and you can't even cycle to the suicider.

This is why I use mods. VATS is a bad idea implemented poorly.

Its just something carried over from the original fallout games since they where turn based

I don't use VATS; I use jet. It has almost the same effect, but I am allowed to freely pick my targets. At lower levels there is the danger of getting addicted to the stuff, but there are two perks that eliminate that possibility. Jet is very easy to make--in huge quantities.

Give it a try..

Source for this? Because I don´t believe this. I think those comic books also work outside of vats.

You can use chems to increase your damage. Overdrive will allow critical hits outside VATS.

But the sad truth is that past level 50 your damage will stop to increase while the mobs get more and more health with every level. There are two ways to solve this:

1. ECO https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/55503

Allows you to further increase weapon damage via an ingame mod system

2. Remove level scaling https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/41255

Mobs will stop leveling at a certain point and their health won't increase further.

You would be (mostly) wrong. Those magazines only boost critical damage (not normal attack damage), and normally you can not critically hit outside of VATS. The only exceptions would be when using the overdrive chem, or the last rank of the Basher perk. (Sneak attacks count as critical hits in the pipboy counter, but aren't actually critical hits for any other other mechanics).

And as a side note, Tesla magazine is totally useless without a mod to fix it. It applies to weapons with a specific keyword, except that keyword isn't actually used by any weapon in the game.

Ironically shooting suiciders and land mines are one of my favourite uses for it.

I don't know how to do chems. Not because I object to chems, it's just a game. But I never saw how to make it or why I'd use it. Same with vats and a whole lot of stuff. 4000+ hours in and I never played that part of the game. Kinda lame really.

I don't believe me either. I am incredible, aren't I? I mean, I thought those comics upped the damage, and some do but the vast majority only add critical hit damage. With the perks under luck and agility a plain vanilla weapon (not a mod weapon) becomes suitable for higher levels.

It's basic raw material is fertilizer, which you can find--and buy cheaply--just about everywhere. The first place you can make it is in Sanctuary, and there's a bag of fertilizer laying right next to the machine you use to make it. The Abernathy farm has a dozen or so bags of fertilizer all over the place. Like I said you can make huge quantities of it, and I rarely leave home without a couple dozen ampules hanging around my neck. If you get the chem perk the effects are extended by quite a bit.

VATS is nice with the 2nd perk of "Blitz". Accuracy with melee is pretty much a pointless stat, and that perk lets you go a rather long way.

VATS with a gun is... ehhh... most of the time it's better to manually aim.

As to the drugs.. Psychobuff, Fury, Overdrive, Bufftats, Whiskey.. uhhh.. i don't think ive forgotten any... ; anyways, use those and then VATS with a melee weapon = profit?

if anything took more than 1 shot i'd be surprised

It really depends on the specific kinds of weapons you're using. My prior run was my first 'really exploiting melee perks' character and for the first time used some of those melee ones allowing you to use VATS to TELEPORT TO THE ENEMY and smashy smashy. Criticals aplenty, super one hit kills left and right and in sequence. Very nice.

This time, I'm essentially using nothing but Spray n Pray.

There's ZERO need for me to use VATS with this build. None. At all. The only time I have had to use it is if I'm defending a settlement and don't want to riddle my settlers with explosive rounds and turn them against me (which I have learned not to do thankyou very much lol), which means I swap to a lesser weapon and use VATS.
I use VATS not just because it can make fights easier ( it does) but also it places less of a strain my my fingers/hand with too many fast and violent clicks.
