Absolutely.
GOG versions of games tend to be more stable and they perform better overall (since it's just the plain games which are stripped of DRM and other stuff such as Creation Club in this case), not to mention that they more often come in a better state out of the box, like Fallout 3 (and New Vegas, I think) with changes needed for raw mouse input already applied in the files, while it has to be done manually with the Steam versions.
No launchers, no accounts, no servers, absolutely nothing more than just a plain setup.exe (and .bin data files for all larger games) that you simply install and run. And that's it, the end. Seemes unbelievable today, but that's the way it should be.
In the GOG version of Fallout 4, the massive message about Creation Club in the top-right corner is missing, as is the entire Creation Club and its entry in the menu, as well as Mods, only Add-Ons. It looks much cleaner and it works perfectly.
Anyway, I hope releases like this one get all the support they deserve. That way, we can expect more in the future.
Yes, in theory, some next-gen update ought to be released this year.
But it's borderline improbable that it will be a separate product, like Skyrim SE, that besides modest remastering efforts, moved the game to 64bit space.
I'd be surprised if they designated a separate team for a bigger project like that. It would be cool and it shouldbe something bigger, but I expect just a big patch, some behind-the-curtain improvements to the engine, a bump in asset quality here and there, boring elevation of the presets aimed to accommodate current console models, and some kind of transformation of CC. Either to bring in to parity with whatever is in Starfield, or retire it in one way or the other so they can cut support and focus on maintaining Starefield. But there's a good chance they won't do anything more than introducing a new (free) pack of CC mods that can be installed by anyone running an updated version of F4,
Hard to say how it's going to look, certainly they plan to sell F4 for as long as they can and they want this game to look as decent as possible on modern hardware, but main focus is on Starfield and it's future updates, CC-ish things, expansions etc.
Well, and TES VI.
Buying F4 is safe imho. Can't imagine a paid patch on PC, or a patch sold as DLC.
Money is in new copies sold on the wave of new marketing campaign, based on this next-gen update. Starfield is expensive and requires hardware well above F4, so the game for this installment of Fallout is not up.
Isn't all Bethesda singleplayer games on steam DRM free???
..... Steam IS the DRM in question.
Compatibility:
F4SE will support the latest version of Fallout available on Steam and GOG (currently the same version). When a new version is released, we'll update as soon as possible: please be patient. Don't email asking when the update will be ready; we already know the new version is out. The editor does not currently need modification, however when available a custom set of .pex/psc files must be installed.

So as always whenever something new (rarely) happens regarding Fallout 4, Silverlock *has it covered* and this should work fine for those folks who want a 2nd install AND mods, separate from steam!
And, most games work offline in Steam as well.
As for Fallout 4 being released on GOG: Couldn't care less. I buy games on Steam, not on GOG.
It's a third party launch system that requires you own the game through them to launch. There are very few games bought on Steam which CAN be run without steam currently running too.
