If they're all dying from the ride, it's usually because you've inserted four fusion cores instead of three. It counts as a legitimate end to the quest, but if you don't want it to end that way, the best thing to do if you can is to load a savegame from before you put in the fourth core. Messing around with quest stages is something to avoid whenever possible.

If you really insist on it, the quest ID (and other information you might find useful) is listed on the wiki, linked below. It's the Form ID in the data box for the quest. You'll need to replace the "xx" part of the ID with the two digits that match Nuka World DLC's position in your load order. It's often "06", but you can check by using the help command to search for some other Nuka World item by name (like the thirst zapper) and seeing what it has for the first two characters, since they'll be the same.

I rather liked killing them all. First time I played it I did it the boring way.

The bonus to Intelligence for attaining each level is kind of nice, but it gets very expensive, and each one only lasts for 3600 seconds (1 hour of real time).
