If you ARE, and you can get up to the blimp, turn the mission in to Kells instead. It will give a much better reward, however it will also basically force you into the bos line.
Edit: If I prayed, I would pray this gets fixed in Starfield. But I am thinking it won't.
It didn't work when i dismiss him and talk to him again he just says "Ready to continue the mission soldier" and shows the typical trade talk or accept him into the group again but no option to report about the lost patrol mission. ;(
That is just speculation though. I don't really follow the BoS storyline (and I only really did it once part way, looked around the ship, did a few fetch quests. Abandoned that Playthrough.
I think I did get some quarters so at least that far.).
This is what the fandom page has to say about this bug, it might be what's happened here?
-- If the player character puts off completing this quest until after Paladin Danse has become a potential companion, they may be unable to turn the quest in as he will only offer companion dialogue options. However, after "Show No Mercy", the mission turn in will change so one can talk to Kells, allowing for completion.--
I think I had to just nudge it with a console command to finish it, which at this point since dismissing him didn't work and you don't necessarily want to work with the BoS yet, I'd say maybe just hit the ol console. If you are on survival mode this won't work obviously.
Open the console and type in
getstage BoSM01
It will tell you what stage your quest is actually at.
Ideally you want to be at 90 to 148.
If it's at 150, and if you're not planning on killing anyone here (you can sometimes kill brandis but I never like doing that) you can use
setstage BoSM01 200
And it will just finish up the quest. You might be able to then return to the bunker if you eventually choose to join the Brotherhood and convince him to go with them.
I think Danse only accepts the turn in before the Prydwen arrives.
Danse may accept the turn in if Danse is on the Prydwen?
There is three different rewards for the quest depending upon when you turn it in and to who.
Danse pre-Prydwen
Danse post-Prydwen (after Brandis returns to Prydwen)
Commander Kells
If you speak to Brandis aboard the Prydwen before turning in you get a Bloody laser rifle.
You don't HAVE to, you can always betray them later. :D
You can just walk away from the BoS and ignore their missions, and at some point down the line, when you're involved with the rest of the factions including the Institute, there will be a specific moment when you MUST choose one over the others to be your 'main' faction. Any time up until then, you are basically working all of them (well, the three, RR, BoS, Institute) against one another with the solid backup of the MM always there.
