Deacon - Brotherhood problem
Hello, I joined the Brotherhood relatively early after first being on the Prydwen to get the T60 quickly.
I took Danse to North Church and asked him to stay there. I'm in then
to complete Road to Freedom after a long time and should now speak to Deacon.
But all he says is "You sold us to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Brotherhood"
Should I fire Danse first, or does that not matter?
Can someone give me the quest id so I can skip the dialogue with Deacon if need be?

Update: Left Danse in Sanctury, still same problem

You will have to go to a save from BEFORE you brought the ENEMY into the Railroad.

You cannot progress in that story, because you aren't welcome among the Railroad any more. Danse is their enemy, he CANNOT go there. Just like if you brought X688 there.

well I left him in Sanctuary and tried again. But it did not help. I also tried setstage RR102 plus variable. Does not work either.

I guess there is no way to leave the brotherhood for now (and rejoin later)

It can ONLY BE FIXED if you reload from BEFORE you did this...

I'm not a fan of the railroad, but this disturbed me so much I decided to restart the game (and I was level 43) I want to play all possible quests from all factions. Now I see which one I can play without joining early.

You join all of the factions and play against each other for a considerable portion of the game.

There is a thing known as the Point of No Return where you MUST decide which to ally permanently with and permanently make enemies of the other major factions. (MM is neutral.)

But the thing that CAN tip that balance is bringing the wrong companion into the RR.

Unlike X6-88, I don't remember simply bringing Danse into the Railroad HQ actually being a problem in the vanilla game. I've had him stroll in there without any issues, and brought him along specifically to troll them with the fact:

From what I see in the Creation Kit, it looks like Deacon uses the dialogue about selling them out when you're sent by the Brotherhood to kill off the Railroad. Specifically, when you've started Tactical Thinking and enter the Railroad HQ after speaking about it to Lancer-Captain Kells.

EDIT: Or looking at it again, the trigger for the event node seems to be entering any location other than the Prydwen after talking to Kells. Either way, don't talk to Kells if you've started Tactical Thinking.

hmm, Maxon did not send me to kill the RR. Maybe at your game you just picked up Danse at Cambridge Police station and went to RR before you talked to Kells or Maxon.

This time I'm already on the way to RR and want to play some quests for them, before I even think about to meet Danse or enter the Prydwen after Fort Hagen.

In the Creation Kit, see it being triggered on an event node from starting the Tactical Thinking quest, speaking to Lancer-Captain Kells, then entering any location other than the Prydwen.

ok good to know. I hope there are no other game breakers, like "Hey you joined the RR, we don't want you to join us. Leave the Prydwen"

There are other break points between factions, but they're all relatively obvious. Either the game explicitly tells you that proceeding will make a faction hostile (like with the Mass Fusion/Spoils of War pair of quests), or you're directly sent to wipe someone out, like with Tactical Thinking.

You can start Tactical Thinking just fine, since it begins automatically when you finish Blind Betrayal to sort out things with Danse, but going to speak to Kells about it puts you past the point of no return.

well long way to go till Blind Betrayel etc. But I'm more cautious now. Thx alot

I avoided the RR/Brotherhood conflict by not joining the Brotherhood right after clearing out ArcJet with Danse. It was purely a role playing decision though. You can pursue it further, but you have to manage which companion you have with you when you go to faction bases.

Any of the non-faction companions plus Deacon should be fine visiting the RR. Danse is a no-go. You should be able to run through the different faction stories up to The Point Of No Return that way.

The conversation with Deacon before clearing out Switchboard is pretty educational from a RP standpoint if you take the RR path. Basically it's "don't watch what the other factions say, but watch what they do" to know whether they are worth getting involved with. Obviously the Institute and RR are diametrically opposed. The Brotherhood is not really RR friendly either since they are rabid about controlling tech, but it's not as obvious early in the story. If you're going full RR ending then you'll only want to pursue the Brotherhood line so far.

Even Danse really isn't a problem to bring to the Railroad, at least not as an active companion. The only one that causes immediate trouble is X6-88. Which of course is why bringing Danse or not doesn't improve their result.

There's something weird going on in this case, since it sounds like the OP is getting dialogue for a quest stage they haven't actually done yet (apparently not being even near Blind Betrayal), unless they've been playing around with mods or console commands.

if i may ask... how can someone pick up danse directly at cambridge police?
the earliest point i am aware of taking him as a companion is after reunions and taking a vertibird to the prydwen.
paladin.roland Jul 27, 2023 @ 10:56pm
Isn't it possible to take him as companion after Ark Jet? I forgot.
