While the story in NV seems to strike lots of people as the best, and is widely accepted as better than 3 by far, 3 does have a direct connection or two to 4 and a couple things become apparent only if you've played through the whole thing.
I would say play 3 and/or NV but in the long run if you got bored or didn't care for 3 4 won't really help you much there either. 4 is a lot of fun for a variety of reasons, if you don't care for one of those things (settlement building, rambly disjointed storytelling, shooting, perk chart based skills, etc) there might be something else on that same list that will entertain you.
Fallout 76, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Fallout 4 all take place at separate times and places.
from worst to best:
76=just go watch internet historian's video about the fall of fallout 76 and backtrack the links to see other videos that show just how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it was at launch and how it really hasn't changed much recently. Start with this if you wanna start with the lowest of the low but work your way up through all fallout games
fallout shelter = mobile game. Imo not bad but not good it's really slow
fallout 4 = many mods but base game is okayish but not for a fallout title. it's more action shooting but the settlement construction was nice at least. Try normal then modded.
Fallout 3 = better than 4 but suffers from some similar things mostly the story main story. Not many mods
Fallout New Vegas = upgraded 3 in western setting. More old school rpgish you'll spend a bit more time on this one especially with mods and the dlcs. Very crash prone b/c of stunted development time.
Fallout tactics = going into the 2D now. Tactics was eh but 2D and the 2nd worst of the 2D fallouts.
Fallout 1 = first OG of OG.
Fallout 2 = improved from fallout 1 a lot. Peak fallout no matter what anyone says.
Fallout 1 and 2 have absolutely nothing in common with Fallout 3 and 4. Not the same genre, not the same gameplay, not the same devs. If you are looking for an RPG (a real one, Fallout 4 is NOT an RPG) then the original Fallout game should be the first you play.
-Fallout New Vegas
-Fallout 3
-Fallout 4
-Fallout 1/2 (very difficult at first but can be fun once you learn the mechanics)
I never played Fallout Tactics because I couldn't get the game to run. I also never played Fallout 76 but that's because I don't enjoy MMO style games anymore. It really depends on what you prefer to play.
For example: I prefer Fallout New Vegas for the story and the hardcore mode (which I feel like is better than Fallout 4's survival mode) but I love the settlement building and crafting in Fallout 4.
Fallout 3 is a great overall experience plus Liam Neeson is your dad.
Fallout 1 & 2 are turn based games and are extremely outdated in every way. It is extremely hard to play. Old games like that used to come with a user's manual to teach you the basics as tutorials didn't really exist. You could probably find one online if you wanted to give those games a try.
Turn off all auto-saving and don't use the quicksave feature. Only make hard saves and never overwrite those saves. Start deleting hard saves when you reach 100 saves.
I never use mods and my game is pretty stable. The problem lies with how the game engine handles saving. The same problem actually exists in Fallout 4 but not as bad/noticeable.
I played Fallout 3 when I was a kid and I had no idea what I was doing, so technically this would be my first official Fallout game.
Fallout 4 is an action-adventure shooter with RPG elements and then there's 1, which is a full CRPG.
