Point of no return for BOS and Minutemen conflict?
It's been a few years since I've played FO4. I've made a new game on Survival mode and want to do the Minutemen questline against the Institute and also destroy the Brotherhood of Steel afterwards. However, I would like to initially join the BOS so that I have access to the Vertibirds since I can't fast travel in Survival (I have the mod for toggling Survival settings but am choosing not to enable fast travel, before anyone suggests that).

I know there is a way to ally the Minutemen and BOS so that they won't fight after the Institute is destroyed, and I know there is a way to destroy the BOS with the Minutemen also. I guess what I'm wondering is if anyone knows what specific quests lock you in to either ending? I want to do BOS really just for the Vertibird flares to make travel much faster for long distances, but I also don't want to totally ally with them to the point where the Minutemen will not want to eliminate them at the end of the game.

The only way the Minutemen want to eliminate the Brotherhood is if you anger the Brotherhood. Something that doesn't happen during the Minutemen questline. So as long as you don't go shooting Brotherhood members, the Minutemen and Brotherhood get along by default.

The Minutemen are only hostile against the Institute. As long as you don't kill any of their members, the Railroad and Brotherhood remain friendly toward them.

Thanks for looking that up, but that thread didn't provide a clear answer for this particular scenario. It gave some good info on some of the other endings though.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Basically we only get the mission to take out the BOS from the MM is as stated above they become permanently hostile to the MM because of what we do which essentially requires us to shoot a named BOS member like the ones at the police station or certain ones aboard their airship.

The quest to take them out in a MM play-through will not happen unless these conditions are met and it was probably just a means to remove them that we have to force that was given the player if they want to get rid of the BOS without doing a RR or Institute play-through.

Okay thanks. It was years ago where I had a playthrough where that happened. Was trying to remember how it came about. Maybe I won't kill the BOS in this one. Idk yet, but I'm going to make them taxi me around the wasteland in the meantime. :D

A lot of times especially if we use explosives or even guns with explosive damage around certain named BOS like the ones at the police station or airport we can accidently take one out and make the BOS permanently hostile.
